The American country pop star spoke up about her divorce and recalled the heartbreaking moments that led to it.

Kelsea Ballerini guested on the Call Her Daddy podcast Wednesday and opened up to host Alexandra Cooper about her previous relationship with ex-husband and fellow country singer Morgan Evans.

The 29-year-old singer-songwriter revealed that their marriage "took work for a long time," including years of being in therapy and nights of sleeping on the couch after fights.

"There were separations, there was years of couples therapy. There was like, many a night of sleeping on the couch. I don't think it was the first night, but it was a night where I was like, this is not what I want," she shared.

She even disclosed one instance when she slept on the couch the night before the CMAs, and while during rehearsals the next day, she texted her ex-husband, who just plainly replied that he would just see her on the carpet.

Marriage issues

The particular incident eventually became a part of her song "Blindsided," with words like "big fight," "big show," "slept on the couch," and "dying inside" in the lyrics. She further admitted that the song was a response to Evan's ballad "Over for You," which she took offense from.

Cooper directly asked the singer why she needed to sleep on the couch. Ballerini explained that the marriage manifested a stark "sense of disconnection" caused by long stretches of not seeing each other and the "lack of effort to see each other."

She confessed to being so tired from the consecutive travels and performances, where she gives so much of herself. She came to the point of feeling depleted yet misunderstood all at once. Whenever they did see each other, that was the heavy load she was carrying, and she got tired of showing up feeling unseen and unmatched, the singer shared, People reported.

She further revealed that the separation did get "nasty."

Single no more

The singer, who got engaged at age 23, told Cooper that she did not want to have a wedding because of her parent's divorce. However, she did get married and ended up like her parents.

She filed for divorce from her ex-husband last August after being married for almost five years. The divorce became official in November.

Ballerini expressed in the interview that she believes Evans loved her more when she was 23, yet "I love me more at 29."

Currently, she's officially back in the dating scene, which was confirmed when she posted a video of her and actor Chase Stokes in TikTok enjoying some relaxing time in bed together.

Though she said that she is still trying to figure out how to navigate dating, she did admit, with a laugh, that she's currently off the market.
