Mother Furious After Council Labels Her 4-Year-Old Daughter 'Overweight'

Kelly Pedlar has criticized the health council after they labeled her 4-year-old daughter, overweight. Irked mom said that it's "ridiculous" and her child is still "shedding puppy fat."

Recently, the Probus Community Primary School in Cornwall was assessed as part of the National Child Measurement program (NCMP). The group calculated the BMI of the children to see if whether a child is overweight for his or her age.

After the evaluation, the 35-year-old mom, Mrs. Pedlar received a letter from Cornwall Council's public health team -- informing her that her daughter Chloe is overweight for her age. However, the shocked mother was furious and said that the result is "disgusting."

The angry mom said at the age of her daughter she should be "allowed to be children." Mrs. Pedlar also defended her daughter by saying she still fits into the clothes for her age group and Chloe eats a balanced diet. She further added that the result is worrying her because if her daughter will found out about it, "it could cause other problems, such as anorexia."

Several parents complained to the test too, including personal trainer and nutritional therapist, Amelya Lyndsay. She said she felt "insulted" after she received the letter. Mrs. Lyndsay also revealed that her daughter suddenly stopped eating after they found out she belongs to the overweight bracket.

Mrs. Lyndsay also said she was really upset about the result. "It is unbelievable how much damage can be done by this program," she added.

Another mom who received the same letter was Claire Philips, from Camborne, Cornwall. She said the result agitated her son -- knowing that he belongs to the overweight group.

Nevertheless, Shevaughan Tolputt of Cornwall Council's public health team said that the program was created to help children who are at risk of developing health problems. "Once established, obesity is notoriously difficult to treat, so prevention and doing something early on are very important," she added to Mirror.
