Children's Health: Metals From Burning Fuel Oil May Cause Damage To Kids' Developing Lungs

A study has found that nickel and vanadium—metals given off when burning fuel oil—can bring damage to the developing lungs of children. The findings from this study were reported in the American Thoracic Society 2016 International Conference.

Science Daily reported that Robert Urman, PhD, from the University of Southern California and his colleagues looked into the health records of 1,911 elementary school-aged children who lived in eight communities in Southern California. These school-aged children took part in the Children's Health Study.

Children Had Decreased Lung Function Due To Metals

"Some of the highest levels of Ni and V were found in Long Beach, where significant port activity exists," Urman said, as per EurekAlert. Urman and his colleagues found that children in the most polluted communities had around a four percent decrease in their lung function in contrast to those in least polluted communities.

EurekAlert also reported that nickel and vanadium in Southern California are mainly emitted through the burning of fuel oil from marine vessels and cargo ships in seaports along the coast of the Pacific Ocean. The ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles are part of this. Together, the ports form part of the United States' biggest seaport complex.

Air Pollution From Fracking Harmful To Children

In related news, Truth Out reported that air pollution from fracking is specifically harmful to young children and infants. A study had concluded that it poses health dangers for hearts, immune systems and lungs.

According to BBC, fracking is a technique for recovering gas and oil from shale rock. It is also called hydraulic fracturing.

"We conclude that exposure to ozone, [particulate matter], silica dust, benzene, and formaldehyde is linked to adverse respiratory health effects, particularly in infants and children," the researchers said. Their study found that the respiratory organs developing while inside the mother's womb are at risk from the pollutants emitted by fracking and drilling.
