Arizona Measles Outbreak: Is It Because of the Lax Vaccination Implementation?

Arizona is caught in a measles outbreak as the increasing numbers of individuals affected continually moved forward. It was reported that part of the outbreak was due to the resistance of vaccinations among the residents and their children.

CNN reports that the measles outbreak in Arizona could be considered as one of the biggest there is in the United States. It is still questionable as to who bought the measles breakout into the Arizona facilities as it is still under investigation.

22 cases of measles were already confirmed by CNN since July 9, 2016, and the numbers continually increase. It was then noted that the affected areas such as Casa Grande, Coolidge, and Eloy are still under further investigation.

"We have not identified the individual that brought measles into the facility, but it was likely a detainee, staff member or visitor," Graham Briggs, of the infectious diseases and epidemiology section of Pinal County Public Health Services District told the reporters. "Once in the facility, it has been spreading amongst both staff and the detainee population."

Forbes then made a follow-up report wherein it was highlighted that one of the contributing factors of the measles outbreak is the lack of immunization among employees of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The measles outbreak started on the private detention center of undocumented immigrants in Eloy Detention Center. Measles continually spread within the area as most of the individuals residing the facility were not vaccinated.

"The problem is with the staff that doesn't want to comply with our recommendation that started on day one," Dr. Thomas Schryer, the Pinal County health director said. "Which is to become vaccinated or provide proof of immunity.... Neither ICE or CCA requires or encourages staff to have proof of immunity to any disease. All they do is the required TB skin testing."

Measles can cause complications which can result to long-term effect, especially among young children. As the outbreak continually flock, vaccination is being pushed as it is considered as a preventive measure.
