Strict Parenting Latest News & Updates: Is Strict Parenting Turning Kids Into Fibbers? Effects Of Strict Parenting On Child Development

Many parents, especially modern and young parents out there, are already exposed to the wide variety of parenting styles. While many child-rearing approaches can provide long-term benefits and positively promising effects, others do have a negative impact on a child's social, psychological and emotional development.

Parent Herald had already discussed several parenting styles but this article will delve deeper into the effects of strict parenting in child development. According to Modern Mom, strict parenting can yield positive outcomes if it's authoritative instead of being authoritarian, noting the fact that authoritative parenting style provides a balance between "warmth and communication" without losing the "appropriate control and supervision."

Psychotherapist Phllippa Perry and Canadian Victoria Talwar, however, claimed that strict parenting has a major impact on the ability of kids to twist the truth. According to Independent, kids whose parents have too much control over them tend to turn into fibbers or liars as they don't feel safe about telling the truth.

Perry also stressed that the lies are co-created since kids under the strict parenting approach are not allowed to be in a situation to tell the truth. Hence, parents are the ones to be blamed if they're deceived or create children who are skillful and effective liars, Daily Mail noted.

Aside from turning children to fibbers, the authoritarian approach of strict parenting also have other negative impacts on child development. In fact, Our Everyday Life outlined five disadvantages of the rigid ruling structure of strict parenting including rebellion, bullying, communication issues, secrets and lies, as well as blind obedience.

Furthermore, strict parenting also deprives children the opportunity to learn the value of responsibility and self-discipline. Since this approach do not nurture empathy, kids often live in fear and teach them to bully.

Another long-lasting effect of strict parenting is raising children who struggle with mental health issues as the punitive discipline of this approach could lead to anger and depression, Aha! Parenting revealed. This parenting approach also teaches kids that power is "always right" and lastly, strict parenting weakens the parent-child relationship.

Meanwhile, strict parenting done with love and affection is reportedly good for kids. Even though harsh discipline carries a great risk of aggressive, hyperactive and delinquent manifestations, a study claimed that the painful effects of harsh parenting are offset by a kid's feeling of being loved, another Daily Mail article reported.
