'The Incredibles' Sequel Is Changing Direction With New Superheroes? Director Brad Bird Gives The Updates

"The Incredibles" sequel is still happening. Twelve years since Pixar first released the animated movie, its director, Brad Bird, confirmed that development is still taking place. He hints that the project is charting in a new direction in a recent interview.

Brad Bird relates that "The Incredibles" sequel is "actively moving" its development. As it's not expected to be in theaters until 2019, the new superhero movie is going to be added to a spate of other superhero films, from Marvel and DC, since it was first released.

Thus, "The Incredibles" sequel will need to bring something fresh that the movie-going public haven't seen before. The director is aware of the challenges of doing a sequel and told Entertainment Weekly that the new "The Incredibles" will "hopefully [have] the same characters and feel, but going in a new direction."

Bird also added that he hopes the film can repeat what it has done the first time, but "without repeating yourself." "The Incredibles" sequel could be more challenged about bringing the old characters back because the first movie was more than a decade ago.

In a 2015 interview, Brad Bird agreed that the industry is filled with superhero movies already and the audience could be having a fatigue from watching these. So, in doing "The Incredibles" sequel, the focus will be in the characters and not their powers. "It's really about the characters than it is about bursting through walls or something like that," he told IGN.

Ever since "The Incredibles" sequel was announced, speculations of the plot from fans have cropped up online, including a potential time jump to when the kids --- Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack --- have grown up. Brad Bird won't comment on these speculations, but the production team has already mapped out the story arc last year, per Slash Film.

"The Incredibles" sequel is set for a summer 2019 release. It's one of the last few animated sequels that Pixar has planned for in their release calendar as the studio is doing more original animations next.
