‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special 2016: Justin Chatwin’s Superhero Costume Revealed, Similarities To Christopher Reeve’s Superman/Clark Kent

"Doctor Who" fans already know that the upcoming Christmas episode of the BBC series will feature a superhero persona portrayed by Justin Chatwin, but he's not just a superhero. During BBC America's New York Comic Con panel on Friday, it was revealed that Chatwin's superhero character named Grant was inspired by Christopher Reeve's portrayal of Superman/Clark Kent.

Showrunner Steven Moffat and Peter Capaldi (The Doctor) confirmed Grant's resemblance to the Man of Steel. Capaldi described the "Doctor Who" Christmas special as "a new ironic, good-hearted superhero story," according to TVLine.

Moffat, meanwhile, said that Clark Kent is "the best hero ever -- every hero since then has been dispensable - apart from Doctor Who and Sherlock Holmes," Doctor Who's official Twitter page shared. The late Reeve's Superman portrayal was known for its lighthearted and heroic vibe -- a far cry from the dark and sullen Man of Steel of today.

"Doctor Who's" Christmas episode will showcase The Doctor joining forces with Grant and an investigative journalist portrayed by Charity Wakefield. Together, the trio will prevent an impending alien threat to New York City, according to Screen Rant. Matt Lucas' Nardole, who was last seen in the 2015 Christmas special, will return to momentarily fill the companion's shoes, Parent Herald previously reported.

The Christmas special of "Doctor Who" is expected to tug at Whovians' hearts. Moffat said that the episode will have "a lot of heart...[and] a lot of brain too," Radio Times reported. Mark Gatiss, the popular sci-fi series' sometime writer, admitted that he cried while reading the Christmas special's script.

Moffat will leave "Doctor Who" after Season 10, with Chris Chibnall taking over showrunning duties beginning with Season 11. There are speculations that Season 10, Capaldi's third, would also be the actor's last outing as the Time Lord.

Capaldi, however, revealed at the Awesome Con panel last June that Clara (Jenna Coleman) will reappear in some form in Season 10. Whether the Impossible Girl will come face-to-face with The Doctor or if she's just going to be a fragment of memory is still unknown at this point.
