Will the upcoming series "Star Trek: Discovery" on CBS All Access bring in a familiar face? Will Nichelle Nichols come aboard the new ship as her famous character or will she cameo in a different role? Pre-production and casting for "Star Trek: Discovery" is not yet over as producers prepare for a May 2017 launch. There is still plenty of time for showrunner Bryan Fuller to add or do changes to "Star Trek: Discovery's" first offering, which might include Nichelle Nichols.
Nichelle Nichols is best remembered by "Star Trek" fans as Lieutenant Uhura of the USS Enterprise. She was part of the series from 1966 to 1969 and has made a mark in the franchise. Will she be willing to be part of the new show?
Now at 83-years-old and still has not retired from acting, Nichelle Nichols confirmed that she had someone come to her to talk about "Star Trek: Discovery," per Radio Times. But whether or not she's actually going to be in the series is still up in the air. "It depends on what Star Trek: Discovery is about," the actress stated.
The Guardian notes that "Star Trek" broke ground when it added Nichelle Nichols in the cast. During her time, black women on successful TV shows were a rarity. But she confessed that she wanted to leave the show after the first season. However, she stuck around because of Dr. Martin Luther King, whom she met at a dinner and eventually became a good friend. "He was both attractive and a Trekker. He was an attractive Trekker," the actress said.
For Nichelle Nichols, being part of a franchise that's currently celebrating its fiftieth year is huge privilege, especially when people continue to be passionate about "Star Trek" after all these years. "The dedication is marvelous. It's kind of weird too - but you go with it," she remarked.
