#FreeBresha Movement Latest Update: 14-Year-Old Teen To Spend Holidays In Jail Awaiting Trial For Killing Abusive Father Who Terrorized Family For Years

The "#FreeBresha" movement remains hopeless as it was reported that the 14-year-old teenager, who killed her father after shooting him for beating her mother and terrorizing their family, will remain behind bars. The teenager awaits trial for the incident that took place almost four months ago.

Huffington Post reported that the teenager, Bresha Meadows, has been charged with aggravated murder for the death of her father, 41-year-old Jonathan Meadows. She remained at the Trumbull County Juvenile Detention Center in Warren, Ohio.

Just this Tuesday, Bresha was supposed to be at a court hearing but it was postponed until Jan. 20. The hearing was said to be an opportunity for her defense team to ask for her release before the trial starts.

Juvenile Justice Coalition executive director Erin Davies said the average pretrial detention lasts around 10 to 12 days only. For Bresha, however, she remained locked up behind bars for a total of six months by next year since the hearing has been moved to January, Free Bresha reported.

Davies pointed out that detentions of young people could affect both their mental and physical well-being and it could be long-term. Teens subject to such could engage in self-harm and might not want to get back to school after.

Davies also stressed that since Bresha is 14 years old, the case might be transferred to an adult criminal court. If Bresha will be tried as an adult and proven guilty, she could face life behind bars.

A lawyer for Bresha, Ian Friedman, said that his client witnessed her father kicking her mother and that her mom was sometimes left unconscious due to the beating. The gun that Bresha used to take the life of her father was said to be the same weapon being used to terrorize her and her family.

Back in 2011, Bresha's mom Brandi Meadows went to police to say that her husband is capable of extreme violence. She added that he threatened to kill her and their three children. Months before the shooting, Bresha ran away from home and told her aunt about their situation at the hands of their father.

A fundraising site has raised more than $50,000 for Bresha and her family. Meanwhile, the Juvenile Justice Coalition is an organization that advocates for youth involved in the juvenile justice system of Ohio.
