Healthy Twins Born To 64-Year-Old Mom Via C-Section; She Had Her First Child In 2012

A 64-year-old woman has given birth to a set of healthy twins via C-section in Spain. The pregnancy at an advanced age was a success through IVF treatments done in the United States.

The mom, whose identity has only been disclosed as M.I.A., is doing alright along with her babies. She gave birth to a set of fraternal twins, a boy and a girl, according to Think Spain.

The mom had fertility treatments in the U.S. before returning to her home in Burgos to give birth. She underwent a C-section at the Recoletas Clinic. Dr. Enrique Martin of the said hospital confirmed the births happened on Tuesday, Feb. 14, according to The Guardian.

The hospital, however, expressed some concerns about the mom's ability to take care of her newborn babies. Her first child, a daughter born in 2012 when the woman was 58-years-old, is no longer in her care as she was deemed neglected.

Reports from the Spanish newspaper Diario de Burgos claimed the 64-year-old mom's first child was not taught proper hygiene and didn't have good social skills. She was also not enrolled in school. In 2014, the government took the child from her mom to live with other relatives.

It's unclear how M.I.A. was able to travel to the U.S. and avail of costly IVF treatments. Doctors at the Recoletas Clinic said the mom came to the hospital when she was four months pregnant with the twins.

M.I.A. is not the only Spanish woman to have a pregnancy at an advanced age. A few months before the 64-year-old mom gave birth, Lina Alvarez gave birth to her third child at 62.

Alvarez is a doctor specializing in IVF treatments. According to Independent, her situation has caused a debate in the country. Spanish laws do not have limitations when it comes to the maximum age of assisted pregnancy via IVF. Due to these two pregnancies, however, some officials are considering there should be laws against it.
