The Minnesota government has proactively dispersed stimulus checks worth up to $1,300 as part of a tax refund initiative. Currently, they released checks that had not been claimed by beneficiaries and had expired.

Over the past year, about 128,000 checks were rereleased because they were not collected within the allocated time.

The Minnesota Department of Revenue verified that all checks were sent to the most recent addresses on file. Beneficiaries have a two-year window to cash these released checks.

The Department detailed on its website that nearly 2.1 million direct payment tax rebates, totaling almost one billion dollars, were processed following legislation passed in May 2023. These payments were based on 2021 income or property tax returns previously filed.

Payments were delivered through direct deposit and physical checks primarily from August to September of the current year. An additional 150,000 unclaimed checks were reissued in November and December, followed by another round in February and March for remaining uncashed checks.

Residents eligible for these checks must meet specific criteria: residency in Minnesota during part or all of 2021, filing relevant tax forms by December 31, 2022, and meeting income thresholds.

For those whose checks expired, there are steps to resolve the issue:

Update Information: Ensure the Department of Revenue has your current address.
Contact the Department: If you haven't received or have questions about your check.
Await Reissuance: Reissued checks remain valid for two years.

Keeping personal information current is vital to avoid future issues with payments or communications from the department.

Despite challenges like expired checks, established procedures ensure recipients eventually receive their owed benefits. Keeping information updated helps maximize financial benefits without significant inconvenience.

$1,300 Stimulus Check Already Transmitted

A large number of Minnesotans had received one-time tax rebate payments authorized by the legislature during the last session, funded by the state's large budget surplus.

According to Revenue Commissioner Paul Marquart, 200,000 payments were electronically sent late at night on August 11, 2023.

Governor Walz approved strongly for these payments, often referred to particularly as "Walz checks," although this isn't their official name and the amounts are lower than originally hoped by the governor.

Recipients do not need to take any action to receive these payments, as they will be automatically deposited into bank accounts or sent by mail based on 2021 income tax returns.

The exception applies to individuals who have moved or changed bank accounts since filing their 2021 return and missed the July deadline to update their information with the state.

"If updated address or bank information was not provided, we will utilize the details from your 2021 Minnesota Income Tax Return or Property Tax Refund to send your payment," stated the state tax rebate web portal. "Failed direct deposit attempts will result in a check being mailed to the address on that return."

Here's What You Need to Know About $1300 Payments

Anyone who lived in Minnesota in 2021 and filed an income tax return or property tax refund is qualified, given they show the adjusted gross income limits from their 2021 tax return ($75,000 or less for single filers, $150,000 or less for married couples filing jointly).

Those surpassing the adjusted gross income limits claimed dependents and taxpayers who died before January 1, 2023.

No application or form is needed. Repayment will be automatically delivered based on 2021 income tax returns, including adjusted gross income, mailing address, and direct deposit details if given.

$260 for each taxpayer with adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less in 2021

$520 for married couples filing together with an adjusted gross income of $150,000 or less in 2021

$260 per dependent, up to three dependents, if the adjusted gross income requirements are met. This could mean the highest payment of $1,300 for married couples with three dependents.

Payments are processed and started to arrive in bank accounts.
