Beyoncé makes another unprecedented move in her career as an influencer and celebrity icon. The Grammy-winning singer wants four female students to slay their college course and she's willing to support them via her Formation Scholarship. Michelle Obama commends her for the initiative.
The accomplished music artist announced her free college education program on Monday, April 24 on her official site. She explained she's offering the Formation Scholarship for incoming and current students, including those taking a graduate's course.
The Formation Scholarship is for women who want to pursue studies in music, creative arts, literature and African-American studies. Eligible schools include Berklee College of Music, Howard University, Parsons School of Design and Spelman College.
Four female students will receive $25,000 each from the scholarship. They will be chosen from those who submit their portfolio and an essay answering Beyoncé's question: "How has LEMONADE inspired your educational goals?"
Former First Lady Michelle Obama commended Beyoncé for her scholarship initiative, the Independent reported. Obama thanked her on Twitter, saying she's a role model for everyone. Obama, a staunch supporter of education for girls, established Let's Girls Learn during her husband President Barack Obama's term.
Beyoncé's announcement comes one year after the release of "Lemonade," her recent Grammy-winning album. Incidentally, "Lemonade" received the prestigious Peabody Award for its cultural contribution.
"The audacity of its reach and fierceness of its vision challenges our cultural imagination," organizers of the Peabody said in their statement, as per E! News. For the panel, "Lemonade" showed "a stunning and sublime masterpiece about the lives of women of color and the bonds of friendship seldom seen or heard in American popular culture."
