A sequel to the robot movie "Pacific Rim" has been reportedly delayed indefinitely.
Cinemablend reports that "Pacific Rim 2," although originally targeted for release on Aug. 4, 2017, is indefinitely put on hold due to behind-the-scene conflicts between the studios are responsible for it.
The entertainment site wrote that the information about the delay was buried inside a long report from The Hollywood Reporter about some conflict going on between Legendary and rival studio Universal. Although they do have some form of partnership due to some films such as the high-grossing "Jurassic World" and "Steve Jobs," Legendary has decided to step on the brakes regarding Guillermo del Toro's giant robot-versus-giant monster sequel.
Variety reports that the first film was originally produced at $190 million, but only earned only $101 million in the United States. However, it was able to earn $310 million internationally, $114 million of which came from the highly populated nation of China.
The THR report noted that Legendary liked the fact that Pacific Rim made it big in China because the company is heavily invested there, but still the production for the sequel has been stopped indefinitely and will be pushed back, "if it gets made at all."
Pacific Rim is a movie that revolves around the story of how giant robots, called "jaegers," fight against humongous monsters, called "kaijus," that emerge from an interdimensional portal at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. It was directed by Del Toro, and starred by Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi and Robert Kazinsky.
In an early interview with Collider, Del Toro gave ideas about the sequel's plot (which fans will not probably see unless the movie pushes through):
"It's a few years after the first one. It's not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after - what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It's quite a jump," said Del Toro about the sequel's timeline.
Cinemablend adds that this time, Dr. Newton Geiszler (played by Charlie Day) and Dr. Herman Gottlieb (played by Burn Gorman) are going to be the main characters, although Del Toro hinted that all surviving characters from the first movie will most probably return, meaning viewers will see more of Raleigh Beckett (played by Hunnam), Mako Mori (played by Kikuchi), and Hannibal Chau (played by Ron Perlman).
"It's gonna be quite a different adventure," Del Toro said, referring to the new, but now indefinitely delayed movie.
For now, Del Toro's movie Crimson Peak will be in theaters Oct. 16.
