Mom Posts Video of Babies Who “Ate Purple Sharpie” On TikTok

Another mom is making people online crazy with a TikTok video. Christel Holland, through her TikTok account, posted a video showing her babies with purple mouths. It shows an old and recent video of her 3-year-old and 1-year-old babies.

In the video, Christel says her daughter ate a purple sharpie when she was a baby and that it stayed for a week. Before ending the video, she also showed her baby boy then says, "And then my son did it too."

Christel captioned the video with, "Only moms know what this actually is. (laughing emoji)"

Buzzfeed contacted Christel to ask about the purple mouths of her kids. In an interview with the San Diego-based mom, she said that she is treating her baby's oral thrush.

Christel's now three-year-old daughter had this a few years back. She discovered this when she noticed that her daughter's mouth was covered with a white substance that has a thick consistency.

"At first, I thought maybe her tongue was just coated from her formula," Christel said. It was the doctor that said it's oral thrush.

Just recently, his 1-year-old baby boy also got the infection.

What is oral thrush?

According to the medical director of WebMD, Dr. Hansa Bhargava, thrush is a yeast infection. This infection can cause infections in the vagina of women. However, it is also widespread among babies. The symptoms of oral thrush include just exactly what mom Christel saw with her daughter - whitish plaques in the mouth. This white substance can make children fussy, according to Dr. Bhargava.

What causes oral thrush?

The maturity of the babies' immune system has something to do with thrushes. Dr. Bhargava says that if the immune system is less mature, it causes thrushes, although this is not the only reason.

Babies may also be infected due to contamination of nipples on bottles and pacifiers.

Experts highly encourage parents to keep such items of babies clean at all times. Washing the pacifier when it drops to the floor could be a big help.

When a mother is breastfeeding, they should be mindful of pain or irritation around the nipple area. It could be an indication of yeast infection too.

But, why are the babies' mouths purple?

The medicine used to treat thrush is Gentian Violet. So yes, the reason for the babies' purple mouths was not Sharpie, but medicine!

Gentian Violet is an antifungal medicine that greatly helps in treating the thrush. The medicine is used several times a day in a baby's mouth. The treatment can last up to ten days.

Since it was Christel's second time to see the white thick substance, she immediately knew that her baby boy needed the violet medicine too.

Mom shrugs off bashers

The video mom Christel posted on TikTok now has more than six million views (6.4 million). Christel shared with Buzzfeed that some viewers did not like that she was making fun of her kids "eating Sharpie." However, she pointed out that TikTok is an app where one can watch people's viral videos or be the person who makes these videos. Christer prefers to be the latter.

The babies of Christel are now both doing fine. Thanks to violet medicine.
