Officer Chauvin Charged for George Floyd's Death, Wife Files for Divorce And Wants Name Changed

Officer Derek Chauvin from the Minneapolis Police Department was fired from the force and charged for the murder of George Floyd, Chauvin's wife has filed for divorce while also demanding a change in her name. Chauvin is the policeman seen on video, kneeling on George Floyd's neck.

The death of Floyd has brought thousands of people to protest online and offline.

It has also taken a toll on Chauvin's personal life as his wife already filed a divorce.

Chauvin's Wife Wants to Change Her Last Name

According to a file obtained by PEOPLE, Kellie Chauvin, the wife of Derek Chauvin, separated from her husband on May 28.

The separation happened a day before Derek Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder in the death of Geroge Floyd.

It was also indicated in the divorce file that Kellie would like to revert her name to her maiden name.

According to a report from PEOPLE, the wife filed for divorce due to an "irretrievable breakdown" of the relationship. The two married in June 2010.

Kellie had children from a previous marriage, but no children with Chauvin.

Besides changing her last name, Chauvin's wife also requests for the titles of their homes in Minnesota and Orlando, Florida.

The divorce filing also states that Kellie can support herself while working as a realtor, thus, not wanting any spousal support.

In a statement provided by Kellie's attorney, Amanda Mason-Sekula, Kellie offers sympathy George Floyd's family and to everyone grieving for what happened.

Chauvin and three other officers fired and charged

In the video that went viral, Chauvin is seen holding Floyd down with three other officers.

Despite Floyd's plea for help, Chauvin was still seen with his knee on Floyd's neck.

Chauvin has been charged not only with third-degree murder but also with manslaughter.

The other three officers who were also present during the death of Floyd have been fired from the Minneapolis PD. They are still under investigation, but charges are anticipated.

Chauvin remains in jail and has not entered a plea yet.

Floyd's death sparked a call for racial equality.

After the footage of Floyd and the police surfaced the internet, protests have been staged not only in Minneapolis and other cities. The protests are a call of racial equality and to stop police brutality.
