Black Teen's Death
On March 2, 2008, Jamiel Shaw Jr., a black teen, was shot to death by Pedro Espinoza.
Espinoza is an illegal immigrant and was a gang member. Shaw Jr. was only 17 years old then. He was a football player and is considered by his family as arising star in football.
According to reports, Espinoza mistook the black teen, Shaw Jr., for a member of a rival gang.
Father's cry for help
After his teen son's death, Shaw Sr. sought help from politicians and different community leaders. However, he was turned down multiple times. That is why he chose to speak out on his own about California's immigration policies.
Shaw Sr. has launched the hashtag #JamieIsLawRadio. This hashtag is his way of advocating immigration policies. He also started a radio show as part of his Jamile's Law project. The project also addresses issues in the African-American community.
According to Shaw Sr., "Because of the illegal aliens and the way they get all the support in California, no one would jump on board."
The alleged double-standard in the Black Lives Matter Movement
After the death of George Floyd, a lot of people were protesting against racism and police brutality. The Black Lives Matter Movement became the talk of the town
However, for Shaw Sr. all black lives should matter. The Black Lives Matter Movement should not only focus on the lives which were taken due to police brutality.
He said that any tragic death by a black person should not be like a "death lottery." Shaw Sr. emphasized that it should not be a case of whether when the police murdered someone, they will get something out of it, and if not, families are supposed to stay at the sidelines while grieving.
Shaw believes that what he is witnessing after George Floyd's death is unfair for him. He thinks that because the police killed Floyd, protesters can do whatever they want without going to jail. He said, "Man, this is unfair, you know? I'm black, where's our help?"
Last month, a lot of protests were organized due to the death of George Floyd. Some of these protests have become violent, and arrests have also been made.
