11-year-old girl targets to make 1,200 masks for the needy

An 11-year-old girl, Holli Morgan, from DeKalb County, Atlanta, plans to make 1,200 masks for the needy. She even took up sewing classes to learn how to make cloth masks.

Morgan started making masks for healthcare workers when she saw a report on Channel 2 News about the mask laws. She saw that law mandates everyone to wear masks, so she asked her mom how the rules would apply to the homeless people.

Worried about the homeless

It got Holli worried about how the homeless could protect themselves and stay away from the virus. She decided to make masks for them. As of now, she has already made hundreds of masks, and she plans to make more.

After Holli got inspired by the news, her efforts became so large that Channel 2 News had to interview her and her mom. Her mother told the channel that Morgan was a little girl who wanted to be a part of something big. She explained that none of them knew how big her initiative would go.

A blessing to others

Dr. Kerwin Lee, the pastor of Morgan's church, called the girl a "blessing to others." He helps the girl distribute the masks to the needy. He said that throughout their 25-year history, they have seen God use many young people to make a difference. He added that Morgan is making a difference, especially now that there is a pandemic.

On July 10, 2020, a WSB-TV article stated that Morgan has already made 574 masks out of her 1,200 masks goal. On July 12, 2020, ABC7-NY indicated that the little girl has already sewn 580 masks.

To calculate her speed, she makes six new masks in two days, which means she makes three masks a day. Using this pace, Morgan would reach her goal by March 5, 2022, Saturday if she takes Sundays as her day-off.

Morgan's mother shared that her daughter has always had a big heart since she was born. Dr. Lee agreed that the movement was the girl's initiative without someone implanting the idea on her. He knew that Morgan saw the need to help others and knew that she was gifted to do it, so she did.

Helping the Earth

While adults praise the young girl, she remains brave and humble by explaining why she is doing what she does. She said that it makes her feel like she did something to help the Earth.

Now that the resources are scarce and are hard to have, it is hard to help even yourself and your loved ones. More so, going the extra mile for strangers and the needy. While many children spend their time indoors playing games or watching TikTok videos, this little girl uses her time wisely to help those in need.
