Terminally Ill Kentucky Dad Flies to Watch Son Play Football Thanks to Nurse

A terminally ill Kentucky dad flew to see his high school son play football for the last time thanks to a hospice nurse who was "determined" to help him. The nurse was in tears upon seeing the impossible come to life.

Jerree Humphrey, a nurse at Hospice of Lake Cumberland, told CNN that she was teary eyed when she saw the father and son together. She said that after the son, Cade Sullivan's, football game on September 11, the child had a long hug with his dad, Scott Sullivan.

The son was so thankful

Humphrey told the outlet that she could not help but cry upon seeing how the dad embraced his son so hard. The son was so thankful that his dad was there for him on his final game.

CNN reported that the emotional father-son duo moment was not always guaranteed. A month ago, doctors diagnosed the 50-year-old dad with a rare and terminal type of cancer. He was ill with leptomeningeal carcinomatosis.

Only a few weeks to live

The National Institutes of Health said that that leptomeningeal carcinomatosis affects membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Doctors gave Scott weeks to live because of how severe his sickness was.

According to CNN, in early August, when Scott returned to his Somerset home on hospice care, he wanted to do one thing. Scott wanted to attend Cade's first sophomore year football game at Pulaski County High School in the final weeks of his life.

Long travel not good for the ill dad

Sadly, Humphrey told Scott that it would not be in his best interest to go to Belfry. She said that given his current condition, the three-and-a-half-hour drive to the place where the game was being played would not be good for him.

The hospice nurse told the outlet that she does not know how realistic it would be for Scott to be in the car for seven or eight hours. Even though that was the case, Humphrey still insisted on finding a way to get Scott to watch his son's game.

A dentist helped him fly to his son

A few days later, she heard that a local dentist, Dr. Denny Brummett, said he would fly Scott to his son's game on his plane. On September 11, Brummett, Humphrey, Scott, and his girlfriend rode the plane to fly to Belfry.

As reported on CNN, Scott made sure to prioritize his health upon arriving. He watched his son play while sitting on a hill away from the fans. Cade and Scott reunited and shared an embrace after the game. Humphrey made sure to capture the memorable moment in a photo.

Nearly a week after that moment, Scott told the outlet that he had a hard time describing his emotions. He was hopeful he could attend Cade's next football game this Saturday. He said that he was so happy to see his son at that time.
