When you mention coconut oil for dogs, many owners would admit that they are still in the dark as to how this super-food is going to benefit their pets. Coconut oil, no doubt, provides humans with awesome health benefits. But is it good as well for your dog?

Benefits of coconut oil for dogs

Coconut is generally good for dogs, but experts advise to use it in moderation. However, your dog could be allergic to it, so it is better to check with your vet first.

Dogs benefit from coconut oil mainly because it is packed with medium-chain fatty acids, particularly lauric and caprylic acid. These fatty acids are suitable for dogs in that they help improve the digestive system and immune system.

Great looking coat

Coconut oil helps promote healthy skin and coat. It helps hydrate the skin and improve the lipid levels. Not only does it help dogs have a glossy and sleek coat, but it also moisturizes the skin, thus, prevent dry and itchy skin.

Helps dogs lose weight

Maintaining an ideal weight is crucial to having a long and healthy life. Even dogs can be overweight and that could result in health issues in the long-term. Some of the issues resulting from obesity include joint problems, diabetes, liver disease, and high blood pressure.

Coconut oil is beneficial in terms of weight loss as it helps balance the thyroid and decreases fat deposits. A dog's body is built to quickly metabolize the coconut oil's medium-chain fatty acids and convert it into energy. The more energetic your dog becomes, the faster he can lose weight. Of course, your dog still needs regular exercise as part of his weight loss plan.

Best for treating wounds and cuts

Coconut oil has natural antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. You can use coconut oil as a topical antibiotic to help heal minor cuts, wounds, and sores. And unlike chemical-based preparations, you don't need to worry if your dog licks it. It is totally safe.

Eliminate doggy odor

Perhaps one benefit that even pet owners would appreciate about coconut oil is its ability to help prevent dogs from stinking. When added to a dog's diet or used to brush their teeth, coconut oil help improve the smell of their breath and fight offensive odors.

How to give coconut oil to your dog

How much coconut oil you can give to your dog would depend on your dog's size. The rule of thumb, however, is one teaspoon per 10 pounds of a dog's body weight. It is recommended to start slow, though: ¼ teaspoon for small dogs and one tablespoon for big dogs, daily. You can give it 1 to 2 times per day with meals. For dogs with weight problems, it is recommended that you do not exceed the dosage to more than once a day.

If you want to apply it topically, just put a small amount onto your hands and rub it. Then gently apply and massage it onto the fur and the skin. To treat wounds and cuts, you can use an eyedropper to apply the coconut oil. Then remove excess oil using a towel or tissue. Make sure that the dog does not lick the wound in the meantime, so that the skin can absorb the oil.
