An 11-year-old girl who sews masks for the needy was surprised with a $1,200 check to help her buy a new sewing machine and start her own YouTube channel.
Eleven-year-old Holli Morgan loves sewing, and she dreams of making it big in the fashion industry one day. But for now, she is using her talent for a nobler cause - create masks for local health workers and those who can't afford it.
She wanted to sew masks to help healthcare workers
At the start of the pandemic, Holli, whose mom is a health care worker, realized that medical staff is in dire need of face masks to protect them from the coronavirus. She decided to help by sewing masks to make 500 pieces to be distributed to health care workers. And so used the skills she learned when she took up sewing classes at a non-profit class called Stitch It To Em to realize her goals.
With her sewing instructor's help, Holli began her mission using all the supplies available to them at the time - leftover fabric, some needles, and thread. The initial masks they made were distributed to doctors' offices, essential grocery store workers, and autoimmune disease patients.
Expanding her target to include those who can't afford masks
Speaking to WGCL, her mom, April McMillian, said that she was relieved that after several months from the onset of COVID-19, the need for masks has started to diminish. She thought that finally, they could stop. Well, not yet. Holli told her mom, "No, mommy." She said that she is going to make 1,200.
When mom asked her why Holli explained that she was inspired by the needy people she sees every time they pass by the church, coupled with the lessons she learned at church about helping the homeless. And so, she decided to up her goal to 1,200 masks and donate them to those who have less in life.
Berean Christian Church in Stone Mountain senior pastor, Kerwin Lee, told WGCL that Holli, even at a young age, is aware that she can still make a difference for humanity, which makes her special.
Holli has always had a heart for serving others. She is always the first in line to want to help in any capacity when she can. - Holli Hearts Humanity - H3 Facebook Page.
$1,200 check so she can buy a new sewing machine and start a YouTube channel
The report said that Holli wanted to have a new sewing machine to make her work much faster. And so the CBS46 Surprise Squad initially wanted to surprise her with a new and better sewing machine, but due to the pandemic, the delivery was held up.
Still, that did not stop the team from doing the next best thing. CBS46 Surprise Squad, in cooperation with United Community Bank, presented Holli with a $1,200 check so she can purchase a new sewing machine for her noble project. The money will also help her buy the equipment that she needs to kickstart her own YouTube Channel.
Holli has also started a non-profit organization called Holli Hearts Humanity to help with her mission.
