A mom gave birth between sections of the bar exam. Brianna Hill from Illinois finished the first two sections of the exam before heading to the hospital.
Hill recently graduated from the Loyola University Law of School. Although she expected that she was going to be pregnant, things turned a little different when the coronavirus pandemic struck the world.
The unexpected labor
Hill knew that she was going to be pregnant during the bar exams. However, she did not expect that she will be 38 weeks pregnant at that time. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the exam had to be pushed to October. That is why instead of taking the exam on her 28th week, Hill was on her 38th week already. She said in an interview with CNN, "I joked about taking the test from my hospital bed. Lesson learned!"
When the Illinois mom's water broke
Each section of the remote bar exam has 90 minutes. The four sections are spread out into two days.
Since the exam is done remotely, exam takers need to sit in front of the computer during the 90-minute test. That way, the proctor is assured that the exam taker is not cheating.
During the first 30 minutes in the first section of the exam, the Illinois mom felt something. She told herself, "I really hope my water didn't just break."
Because she cannot check if what she felt was her water that broke, the Illinois mom chose to finish the first portion of the exam. However, when she finished, she said, "As soon as I stood up when I finished, I knew my water had broken."
The Illinois mom still finished the first two sections.
After the first portion of the bar exam, the Illinois mom called her husband, her mom, and her midwife. She also said that she felt a little panicked during that time that is why she also cried.
When the midwife came, she said that there was still time before Brianna had to go to the hospital.
After knowing this, the Illinois mom chose to finish the second part of the examination.
Mom gave birth in the middle of her bar exam.
After taking the second part, Brianna went to the hospital at around 5:30 pm. The new mom gave birth around ten in the evening.
When the mom gave brith, Brianna and her husband said that they wanted the Illinois mom to finish the bar exam. The medical staff were on board with the idea. That is why on the following day, Brianna was provided with an empty room where she took the third and fourth sections of the exam. A "Do not Disturb" sign was even on the door. During breaks, Hill was able to nurse her newborn baby.
When the mom gave birth, she got a strong support system that helped her in becoming a mom and also a lawyer.
