A barely breathing newborn baby was found abandoned outside a New York home Sunday morning with his umbilical cord still attached. Later, a 23-year-old woman, who police believed to be the newborn baby's mother, was taken into custody a short while later. The mother arrested is still with pending charges as of Sunday afternoon.

Authorities found the naked newborn baby outside a New York home on 126th Street near 107th Avenue in South Ozone Park around 10:15 am. The newborn baby was in a critical condition, so the first responders rushed him to nearby Jamaica Hospital.
The NYPD declined to identify the mother arrested, saying that there is an ongoing investigation. A spokesperson for the department said that additional details would be made available in the case shortly.
Authorities were alerted by a woman who lives next door to the alleyway of the New York home.
Elyte Surajeeli, the next-door neighbor, said that she found the newborn baby in an alley, resting on his side, and in a pool of blood. She then told the baby's mother's relatives to call 911.

Surajeeli said that she heard a little cry that almost seemed like a cat cry when she stepped out of her house to empty the trash. But when she took a look, she found out that it was a baby. She added that the newborn baby's mother's female relative was sitting in the front yard of their New York home, while two children were playing outside.
The next-door neighbor said that she called the woman and told her to hurry up and take a look at what is in their yard. She said that the woman started to scream. Surajeeli quickly told her not to cry and scream and call 911 right away.
The newborn baby's mother came out of the house to wipe him with a towel, and then, the police showed up soon after. The 23 years old mother arrested was taken into custody with still pending charges.
Surajeeli said that the mother arrested was led in handcuffs into an ambulance.

In her last statement, the next-door neighbor showed her shock by saying that she knows them to be amicable, working-class people. She even said that the mother arrested is a person who goes out to work every day like everyone else and that she doesn't know what else to think, since never in her life did she think she would ever see something like that.
Right now, it is unclear how long the baby had been lying in the street at a New York home.
A video captured and uploaded by a neighbor claimed that the baby had been left outside of the New York home the previous evening.
New York State's Abandoned Infant Protection Act allows a parent to abandon a newborn baby up to 30 days of age anonymously and without fear of prosecution, but only if the baby is left in a safe manner and a safe place.
