The 1996 movie "Independence Day" gets a sequel subtitled "Resurgence," and director Roland Emmerich said the official trailer will be released in December.
According to Screen Crush, 20th Century Fox released a teaser trailer on the fourth of July. However, as director Roland Emmerich was still working on the production of the film, there was no actual footage.
In an interview with Cinema Blend, Emmerich said that the actual trailer will be dropped sometime around December.
"Yes. It will probably be happening around the Christmas season," said Emmerich, referring to the trailer.
According to Collider, the sequel will reportedly take place 20 years after the events in the first movie. Coming together, humanity has used recovered alien technology to develop weapons and an enormous defense program in case of any future alien invasion. However, when the aliens do come, the humans find that they are still ill-equipped against the invaders and again the fate of the whole world falls into the hands of a select few, who must find a way to win against this threat.
Emmerich is reported to have finished filming less than a month ago.
Speaking to the entertainment site about the aliens that were faced by Will Smith and the other characters in the first movie, the director said that in the sequel, his goal is to expand the universe.
“Well, it’s only like one of the hives (the 1996 aliens), like kind of moving around. [Laughs] What we did this time, we tried to expand the universe, too." he said. "It’s not as simple as the last one because you cannot make it as simple as the last one. Also it’s a little bit about what happened to our world when you know that they are coming back. We had 20 years to come together as a planet and to build incredible things to have a little more even fight.”
According to Cinema Blend, Emmerich and the cast had a special press conference that was held at the film's set in Albuquerque, New Mexico. At that time, the director also showed the sequel's new spacecraft, the "Moon Tug."
The Resurgence cast will include returnees Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox and Bill Pullman. Newcomers include Liam Hemsworth, Joey King, William Fichtner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Sela Ward, Maika Monroe, and Jessie Usher.
"Independence Day: Resurgence" is scheduled to hit theaters on June 24, 2016.
