Trending baby name explained

If you are curious what names became popular this year, you might be surprised, but some monikers have been canceled out of the top. Read on to know what categories of names became famous for the year.

Politics and pop culture have changed the trend

BabyNames.com Founder and CEO, Jennifer Moss, noted in a press release that what tops the baby names list have changed. Looking through the top 1000 names, Karen and Donald are not found because pop culture, politics, and negative internet archetypes have affected parents' choices.

Moss explained that both Karen and Dick are now linked with negative personality traits. Parents are steering clear from monikers that represent negativity.

Names with "ph"

For the coming year 2021, Moss noted that parents are looking into naming their baby girls with "ph" in it. So expect that Josephine, Ophelia, Persephone, and Sophia might top the trend next year.

Parents prefer "power names"

Moss said that parents are choosing names that show bold characteristics. Many choose to call their children Maverick and Rogue, and gods or goddesses Apollo and Freya. Some would prefer to name that reflect weapons, such as Blade and Remington.

The BabyNames.com CEO believes that parents want their children to become strong during difficult times.

Celtic names for baby boys become famous

This year, the top 20 baby boy's names appeared to be Celtic names, said Moss. A few of them are Aidan, Declan, Finn, Liam, and Owen. These names are all rooted in the Celtics.
