In a viral video on Twitter, a Missouri dad calls for a stop to transgender youth discrimination.
Brandon Boulware, the Missouri dad, has a transgender daughter and gave a moving speech to plea the Missouri state lawmakers. He was calling for a rejection of the House Joint Resolution 53 (HJR 53).
This bill would require students to only play sports in teams that reflect their sex on birth certificates.
House Joint Resolution 53
According to the House Bill, every student in Missouri should only play in the team according to their assigned sex at birth.
This bill is not just being pushed in Missouri, but twenty other states are also considering other bills similar to this nature.
If this bill were approved, it would mean that transgender girls can no longer play in any girls' sports team like volleyball, tennis o dance squad.
The Missouri dad
Boulware introduced himself as a business lawyer, a Christian, and a son of a Methodist minister. In his speech, he said that he is also a father and has four children, two boys and two girls, including one transgender daughter.
The Missouri dad shared his experience raising a transgender daughter. He said that just like the others who kept saying that they do not understand transgender issues, he also felt the same way. He said, "I didn't get it either. For years, I didn't get it."
He said he thought he was protecting his daughter, her siblings, and himself. However, he realized that he was only making his daughter's life miserable.
When the Missouri dad and his wife started to allow their daughter to be free, "The moment we allowed my daughter to be who she is, to grow her hair, to wear the clothes she wanted to wear, she was a different child. It was immediate. It was a total transformation."
The viral video
The now-viral video of the Missouri dad was posted on Twitter by ACLU.
Boulware shared during the hearing how he was raising a child who was not smiling.
Boulware started his speech by saying that he came to testify that day to ensure that his daughter will continue smiling.
He emphasized during the hearing last March 3 that the bill, if passed, will have a significant effect on real people like his daughter.
The Missouri dad's daughter is part of her school's volleyball team. If lawmakers passed the bill, this would mean that she can no longer be part of the team, and that is something that Boulware cannot just let happen.
Before finishing his speech, he made a plea to Missouri State lawmakers, "I ask you, please don't take that away from my daughter or the countless others like her who are out there."
As of writing, the video already has more than six million views.
Even NBA star Dwayne Wade has shared this video on one of his social media accounts. Dwayne also has a 12-year-old transgender daughter.
