A New Orleans baby survives COVID-19 and liver failure. She has battled and done these just before her first birthday. And because of such, Winter has spent more of her life inside the hospital than out.
On the other hand, Winter's family is more than happy and relieved that their baby survives COVID-19 and liver failure. They see her as a miracle and a strong survivor.
In an interview, Tia Nicholas, Winter's mother, said she was just glad that her baby is alive and well.
The New Orleans baby was born on February 25, 2020. After leaving the hospital, Nicholas noticed that Winter's eyes were yellow, and she suspected that it was jaundice.
Based on what she noticed, Nicholas shared that Winter's eyes got worse to the point where they started turning almost green. After a month or so, Winter's eyes remained the same. So, Nicholas brought her to Children's Hospital.
COVID-19 and the Baby
Although the New Orleans baby does not show the usual symptoms for COVID-19, she was still tested for it. This was during the beginning of the pandemic, hence the importance of being tested for one.
After such a test, the doctors confirmed that Winter is positive for the disease. They added that it was inside of her liver, explaining the color of her eyes.
Baby and Liver Failure
Aside from having the COVID-19, baby Winter is also experiencing liver failure.
And if the situation is not worse enough, more tough news follows. Doctors believed that Winter needed a new liver. And after nearly four months at Children's Hospital, Winter was taken to a Texas hospital where she waited for a liver transplant.
Few months in, the family received a call. It was in September when they received the news that baby Winter is finally getting a liver through an anonymous transplant. The liver came from a mother who happened to lose her newborn baby.
When the doctors spoke to her, Nicholas said that the doctors never saw a liver take a liking to a body as it did to Winter. Proving that Winter is doing well and is recovering well with her new liver.
Baby Is a Survivor
The baby survives COVID-19. Although she has sickle cell and has regular checkups, the doctors said that she is doing fine. The doctors assured Nicholas, Winter's mother, that her baby is thriving and is doing very much well, considering the recent and tough battles that she just fought in.
Nicholas also shared that her baby's doctors were shocked at how her baby is doing. Thankfully, Winter is doing pretty good and is operating as a normal baby. Nicholas, together with their family, is beyond happy and grateful that their baby survived such battles at such a young age.
The baby survives COVID-19 and liver failure, and she just turned one last February this year. Her survival and her battles just prove every day how she is a brave and strong survivor.
