A one-year-old Ukrainian baby has finally reunited with his London-based parents after spending three weeks in the war-torn country. According to the Daily Mail, Baby Misha was staying with his paternal family in Ukraine when Russian forces started invading the country on February 24.
Misha's parents Vasyl Kucherka and Tatiana Zavyalova were emotional in the much awaited reunion, bursting into tears upon seeing their young child, who they once imagined could be lost forever after hearing the news that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his soldiers to begin their invasion of Ukraine.
Misha had never met his Ukrainian family before as he was born during the lockdown, which was brought upon by the COVID-19 pandemic. When their baby boy celebrated his first birthday, the 24-year-old Kucherka and 39-year-old Zavyalova thought 2022 would be a good time for Misha to finally meet his grandmother, uncle, cousin, and aunts in Ukraine.
Parents send son to Ukraine for him to meet his extended family
The Russian-Ukrainian couple reside in northwest London, an area where lockdown restrictions had begun to ease in the early part of this year. With restrictions now easing in England, Kucherka and Zavyalova decided to send their son to Ukraine to meet his extended family. They were made to rue that decision as the tension between Russia and Ukraine intensified.
The parents were left worrying for weeks about the situation in Ukraine, a place where their son was now trapped. Zavyalova, who runs a property development business in London with her partner Kucherka, said that the last couple of weeks were horrible in terms of waiting, travelling and going through the borders.
Zavyalova finally heaved a huge sigh of relief with her son now safe, saying "It's been dramatic, very dramatic. But finally, we're all here and we're very happy." I news reported that the reunion did not take place in England, though, as the parents did not want to waste more time in seeing their son once again.
Family travels 1,500 miles across Ukraine to reach Polish border
They decided to travel to Poland to meet their son and extended family, who they hoped could escape the war zone in Ukraine. That they did but the journey to get there was definitely not easy with the Ukrainian family traveling nearly 1,500 miles to reach the Polish border. They had to drive and walk through Ukraine to escape the fighting, with each family member carrying just a small amount of clothes in a backpack.
They had to wait 10 more hours at the border before crossing over to Poland, where the reunion finally took place. The world was a totally different place the last time they saw each other, as that transpired before the COVID-19 outbreak and the Russian invasion.
Kucherka's 48-year-old mother Olha Kucherka broke down in tears upon seeing her son at the visa center. Kucherka had not told his family that he was also coming to Poland to meet them, much to their surprise. He said it was amazing to see his son and his family again. According to the UNHCR, more than 1.85 million civilians have fled to Poland from Ukraine since the conflict started.
