Erim Kaur tried several formulations for hair and beard care in the kitchen with her grandmother for a decade before founding ByErim in 2019.

The family-inspired company has earned £1.5 million and is now valued as a multi-million-pound business. Erim's successful business journey would not have been possible without the support of her family.

Erim said her mom passed away when she was still eight years old. She saw how her mother fought cancer and lost her hair due to chemotherapy as a young girl.

She told The Mirror that her mom's death made an enormous impact on her. She said they were very close, and losing her was something that she had never forgotten. She said her mom was one of the most prominent female influencers in her life.

She remembered that her mom had beautiful, long hair, valued in her Sikhism faith.

Erim revealed that she also experienced alopecia due to stress as a young girl. She asked her grandmother for help as losing her hair was part of her grieving.

For Erim, hair is part of a person's identity, not just an image, and losing it is difficult. Losing her hair due to alopecia was genuinely heartbreaking.

Eventually, the hair oil that helped treat her hair is the same solution that she is offering now. The hair oil that their company uses helps anchor the hair to the root and bring it back faster during periods of hair loss.

She said that her experience inspired her to find hair solutions for other people struggling with hair loss. She now sells oil products designed to promote healthy hair.

She was already used to making weekly homemade hair oil masks at home as she also has South Asian roots. She incorporated these traditions into her business.

My London News wrote that Erim is also a beauty influencer. She has 245,000 followers on Instagram.

How she started her business

According to Entrepreneur's Handbook, Erim's memories of her mother's luscious, long hair drove her and her grandmother to experiment with the perfect hair formula.

Growing up, Erim said that hair oiling has always been a part of her beauty routine. Finding the perfect balance to keep her hair strong and healthy is something that she has crafted for years.

She found out that the hair oil that she, her grandmother, and the women in their family helped with her alopecia. She said she had used the recipe since she was 14 and could not live without it.

Erim said that to get capital for her business, she worked at a nightclub and saved up her tips to start ByErim with £10,000.

When she launched her product, ByErim sold out the first 250 bottles in the first hour, while the next batch of 500 bottles was sold in two hours after it was made available.

Three years since she launched her product, Erim is still passionate about helping people with their healthy hair journeys. She also wants to inspire more young women to overcome loss and manage their businesses by themselves, even at a young age.
