A TikTok mom has divided her followers after sharing an unpopular parenting opinion about Mothers' Day. Sophi Raft believes that "grandmothers should step down" and not expect a celebration with their adult kids on this special day for mothers.

In her TikTok video, the young mother said that Mother's Day celebrations should solely focus on the moms who can enjoy the event with their young children. She thinks that grandmothers should let their sons or daughters be with their growing family.

Sophi further explained that some families are stressing that they have to divide their time on this day to visit the husband or wife's side of the family to be with their mothers. She emphasized that she's not ignoring grandmothers on Mother's Day but said, "it's no longer about you." She suggested giving flowers or honoring grandma on another day instead.

"To someone who has very young kids to get to finally enjoy Mother's Day, it's frustrating to have all these obligations," Sophi said, adding that these obligations end up with the young mom never really getting to celebrate her special day.

Mother's Day for Young Moms to Chill Out

Some of Sophi's followers understood her unpopular parenting opinion about Mother's Day, but she also received criticisms from people who believed that all mothers should be celebrated. One follower even accused Sophi of having an unhappy relationship and warned that she would also long to be celebrated by her adult kids when she becomes a grandmother and mother-in-law one day.

However, a grandmother with five adult kids said that she thinks Mother's Day is for "young mamas to chill," per Kidspot. She noted that grandmothers like her are very understanding and will support Sophi's unpopular parenting opinion.

Sophi could not help but react to some of the criticisms and said that she has a very close relationship with her mother and mother-in-law. Her family sees both sides of the family every week, and she talks to her mother multiple times a day.

However, she firmly believes that the one Sunday she could have on her own, Mother's Day, should be something she could relish. She wants to spend that day in her pajamas and not pack the kids' stuff so they can celebrate with the family and manage her young children when they are breaking down at the restaurant.

How Other Cultures Celebrate Mother's Day

Across the world, other countries have their unique ways of celebrating Mother's Day. For instance, the people of India celebrate the "Durga Puja," a 10-day Mother's Day festival sometime between September and October. It's a combined religious and secular event where many families hold reunions, per the Omaha World-Herald.

In Poland and France, Mother's Day has been celebrated the same way in America and other Western countries with flowers and gifs for moms. However, the French are more extravagant when it comes to meals and restaurant booking.

In Indonesia, Mother's Day celebrations are rooted in traditions, wherein children participate in cultural games with their moms as the judge. In Ethiopia, Mother's Day is a three-day festival dedicated to moms. It involves offering fruits, flowers, and cheese from the daughters and meat from the sons.
