A couple in India is taking their son to court, making a stunning demand that he and his wife either produce a grandchild within a year or pay them almost $650,000. According to Sanjeev and Sadhana Prasad, they exhausted all their savings by raising and educating their pilot son Shrey Sagar and paying for his lavish wedding.
The couple clearly felt they have gotten nothing in return from their son and what they want now is payback. According to a report by Al Jazeera, the couple stated in the petition they filed last week with a court in the north Indian town of Haridwar that their son has been married for six years now to his wife, Shubhangi Sinha, but they are still not planning a baby.
The couple said that if they have at least a grandchild to spend time with, their pain will become bearable. Sagar's parents said that they arranged their son's marriage to Sinha, who is now 31 years old, back in 2016, in the hope that they would have a grandchild to play with during their retirement.
Indian couple wants 50 million rupees from their son if no grandchild is produced
The compensation the disgruntled Indian couple is demanding is 50 million rupees which is equivalent to $650,000. The said amount covers the cost of their son's wedding reception in a five-star hotel, a luxury car worth $80,000 that they acquired for him, as well as the couple's honeymoon abroad.
According to the Times of India, the parents also allotted $65,000 to get their son trained as a pilot in the United States. That dream did not turn into reality as their son returned to India unemployed. Sanga returned to the subcontinent in 2007, but lost his job with his family having to support him financially for more than two years.
The couple also mentioned in the petition that they had to take a loan to build their house and now they are going through a lot of financial hardships. The couple added that mentally, they are quite disturbed too because they are living alone.

Court hearing set to take place on May 17
According to the couple's lawyer Arvind Kumar, the petition will be taken up for hearing on May 17 by the court in northern India. The country of India is known for having a strong joint family system, with many generations, including aunts, uncles, grandparents, and nephews, often living in the same household.
However, the trend has shifted in recent decades with young couples nowadays preferring to move away from their parents or siblings, and wives such as in this case. They opt to work rather than focus on having kids and staying at home.
According to a report by the BBC, the couple's son and his wife do not appear to have commented on the highly unusual lawsuit, which was filed on grounds of "mental harassment."
