The birth of the sixth baby for Kentucky mom Heather Skaats was nothing short of a surprising event as she managed to deliver her own baby by the side of the road while her other kids watched what was going on.
Recounting her experience with Today, Skaats said that it all happened so quickly. One minute she was feeding horses with the kids inside their barn. The next few minutes, she delivered her own baby and caught her baby's head during the birth by the roadside.
The mother said she didn't even need to push the baby out of her because it was over so quickly. Skaats said her newborn started "crying right away," but the placenta was still inside her.

It Wasn't Her Due Date
Skaats was planning on home birth as before. She explained that home births allowed her to trust her body, and she has mastered the process because of her previous experiences.
The mother wasn't due to give birth until three weeks, but she admitted, in a Facebook post, that she did notice having lighter contractions as she was driving that morning. Yet Skaats brushed this aside because her previous babies weren't born until eight hours after the first contractions.
The busy mom was doing errands that morning when she felt her contractions intensify and get quite close together. She started driving faster, but she knew she couldn't stop the birth any longer.
Skaats pulled over to the side of the road and assured her other kids that everything would be okay. She then sat in a squatting position on the ground just as her water broke. Within seconds, she was carrying her new son in her arms.
"My husband is not too happy about missing it but at least he was on the phone with me when I called to say, "I'm going to have a baby on the side of the road," and 5 seconds later, he came out," the mom wrote on her Facebook message.
Their other children-Kaelynn, 13; Aneleigh, 11; Austin, 6; Luke, 3, and Alyssa, 2-were in shock. Skaats said that they were all "pretty quiet" when she drove back home to deliver the placenta with her eldest child. The midwife arrived a few minutes later. Both mom and baby are doing fine, and the family is still deciding what to name their latest addition.
NC Baby Born on the Road, Too
A few days earlier, in North Carolina, a baby was also born by the roadside. Thankfully, the mother had the help of the local paramedics who were bringing her to the hospital.
According to the Charlotte Observer, the mom was already waiting for the paramedics on the porch of her house because she was in active labor. They got her inside the ambulance and drove off to the hospital.
But five minutes into the ride, the ambulance had to stop and pull over as the baby was coming out. The mom gave birth to a healthy baby girl and thanked the Reems Creek Fire Department for helping her stay calm throughout the delivery.
