Rawkee Hunt, 6, was a freak fire accident victim in 2020, in her family farm in Utah but she is now doing better despite initial worries that she will not survive her ordeal.
The Utah child was only 4 years old when she suffered a horrible accident while she was helping her father. Shay Hunt and his daughter were clearing out weeds and burning the fence lines, which is commonly done on American farms. By some unfortunate luck, a freak wind blew towards Rawkee, burning 32 percent of her body and face.
Shay and his wife Megan Hunt told Daily Mail that Rawkee has had several reconstructive surgeries in the last two years. Her procedures are still not done as doctors foresee her getting more surgeries over the course of a decade.
However, Megan said that her daughter has surpassed all expectations as she recovers from the freak fire accident. There were also periods when Rawkee developed a major reaction against her cortisol treatments that led to her gaining 15-lbs of weight. Doctors had to pause Rawkee's treatment for at least seven months but the girl was determined to get better.
Rawkee Inspires Her Family to Be Positive
Megan said that Rawkee can still sit in front of the mirror and look at herself without feeling any insecurities about the burn marks on her face and legs. Shay, on the other hand, said that he can't shake off the image of his daughter's melting face during that accident.
But the child has been such a positive force despite her traumatic ordeal. Her parents told Metro that it's their daughter's upbeat attitude that keeps inspiring their family.
The Hunts admitted that they have spent millions on Rawkee's surgeries and other medical bills. Her treatments, however, are vital to her regaining some of the functions of her body.
In April 2022, Shay and Megan posted an update on Rawkee's condition and latest photos. Her face is slowly healing after the doctors placed medical water balloons under her skin to facilitate skin tissue growth and expansion. She will also have the same procedure on her legs.
"She is a fierce warrior and she has never let the accident or her injuries get her down," Rawkee's mom said. The family keeps an update via Rawkee's fundraiser on GoFundMe, which is still taking in donations for her decade-long medical expenses.
Rawkee's Siblings, Her Biggest Supporters
Rawkee has three other siblings, Kwinn, 8 years old; Martina, 3 years old; and Kodi, one. Megan said that the brothers and sisters are close to each other and they would sit with Rawkee to do arts and crafts, read stories, or just lie down on the floor to babble as their recovering sister cannot play outside. The youngest has a special bond with Rawkee, who loves to play mommy with him.
Megan also said that her husband has some guilt about what happened to Rawkee but she always assures Shay that this freak fire accident was not his fault. In fact, in their daughter's eyes, her dad is the person who saved her life.
