Florida mom Lex Ginger and her twin babies survived a rare type of pregnancy that happens in one in 60,000 cases. The 30-year-old gave birth to mono mono twins and lived to tell about her unique experience among her TikTok followers.
In a TikTok video, Lex shared that her 2019 pregnancy was a situation like no other. At seven weeks, she went to the doctor for help with her debilitating morning sickness.
The doctor scanned her womb to determine what could be wrong, and the mother was told that she was experiencing such intense symptoms because she was carrying twins. Lex was surprised because she had her first scan one week prior and was told thee was just one baby. The mom was in disbelief because the fetus in her womb "doesn't multiply like that."
However, her doctor said that since the twins appear to be very close together, based on the scans, then Lex might be carrying conjoined twins or mono mono twins.

What are Mono Mono Twins?
According to Columbia University, mono mono twins are short for Monochorionic-Monoamniotic twins. This pregnancy has both fetuses sharing one placenta and one amniotic sac. It's also possible for mono mono twins to be conjoined.
Mono mono twins form in the first few days of the pregnancy when the fertilized egg breaks apart. Dichorionic-Diamniotic or Di-Di twins are fraternal or identical twins with separate sacs and placenta, just like any single baby. Monochorionic-Diamniotic or Mono-Di twins are common to identical twins with the same placenta but separate sacs.
But while Lex was later relieved to confirm that her twins are not conjoined, her doctor further explained the situation with her unique pregnancy, making her cry. Mono mono twins have 50 percent of not surviving passed the 12th week of pregnancy. Her doctor even projected that her babies might only last 24 weeks.
The mom was also told she would have to work with a different doctor because her current one was honest enough to say she could not handle this rare pregnancy. Her doctor told her she was the first case in her entire career.
Lex was also advised to prepare for admission to a specialty 24/7 hospital care when she's in the second trimester, assuming that the babies survive the 12th week.

Raising Awareness for High-Risk Pregnancies
Lex, an attorney, opened up about her experience to raise awareness for high-risk pregnancies. Speaking with Today, the mom said she was suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) before getting pregnant. She also had a blood clotting disorder called factor V. Thus; it was a miracle to learn that she and her husband, Patrick, were expecting a baby.
At the first ultrasound, Lex recalled that her doctor did mention a strong cardiac activity, but they all assumed it was because she was carrying a healthy, single baby. However, her doctor advised her to come to the clinic for another check-up because she had symptoms of hyperemesis gravidarum.
Lex said it was overwhelming to process everything, from her fertility issues to her first pregnancy to learning she's having twins and then finding out that it's a high-risk and a rare form of twin pregnancy. The mom had depression until the crucial 12th week, but with the help of her doctors, including a mental health therapist, Lex was able to pull through with flying colors and gave birth to two healthy boys via C-section at 32 weeks in May 2019. Max and Miles spent 30 days in intensive care before going home. They recently celebrated their third birthday.
