What to Do When a Kid's Penis Gets Trapped in the Swimsuit Mesh
It is summer, and as families head to the beach, discussions on penis getting trapped in swimsuit mesh have become a trending topic online. Doctors say that incidences may be rare, but should it happen to your child, here's their advice. Pixabay

A boy in swimwear went swimming in an athletic facility. After a few hours, he said he could not take off his swimwear as the foreskin got caught in the mesh lining. When the parents tried to get the trunks off, the boy complained that it was painful. The parents found out that his foreskin was caught in the mesh lining, and he was bleeding.

According to Today's Parents, the story becomes a bit more familiar. After a fun day in the water, parents complain that their son's penis is stuck on the internal lining of his swim trunks and cannot be removed. The incident often requires a trip to the emergency room, with parents warning others to remove the mesh from the kid's swimsuit.

Rare occurrence

For some, the incident may sound unlikely. After all, the mesh is supposed to prevent chafing from contact with the swim trunk's fabric and hold everything together close to the body to avoid accidents while swimming, according to Bermies, a swimwear brand.

The story has been a trending topic online, but as per Science Direct, penises getting stuck in mesh lining are rare. A doctor wrote a case where his parents brought an eight-year-old boy to the emergency department after swimming on the beach. When the boy tried to urinate at home, he discovered he could not remove his bathing suit as the foreskin was entrapped. The doctor said he applied topical lidocaine gel so that he could cut the swimsuit mesh without causing much distress.

Dr. Dina Kulik of Kidcrew admits that she has not encountered a foreskin injury case from bathing suits, adding that she does not think the issue is common enough.

A Reddit user, u/_niko, also shared that her five-year-old son had the same problem four years ago. The part of the foreskin got trapped in one of the tiny holes, but she did not need to take him to the emergency department. However, the foreskin got swollen to the size of a small pea. The post said that the view was disturbing. She tried to cut around the mesh with scissors. She said she managed to cut the mesh next to the foreskin and remove the individual fibers attached to his son's penis. She noted that the swelling was gone an hour after she removed the mesh and the fibers. Although the little guy complained of pain during urination shortly after the incident, otherwise, he was okay.

Kulik adds that should the unfortunate incident happen, she advised parents not to forcibly remove the mesh as it may cause unnecessary pain for the child. She recommends bringing the child to a health care provider so they can administer local anesthesia and then remove the mesh with fine scissors. The doctor also said removing the mesh lining from swimming trunks is unnecessary. But she added that if parents are more comfortable cutting it off, they can do so.
