"Mad Max: Fury Road" was an unexpected hit with almost $400 million in sales worldwide and moviegoers raving about the post-apocalyptic film. With its massive success, it's not a surprise that a sequel will be made. However, it seems that fans will have to wait for a while before the next “Mad Max” movie hits the big screen.
According to Cinema Blend, details about the storyline are scarce at the moment as there are two contending scripts. The people behind the film, including director George Miller, are not yet sure on which of the two scripts will be used.
In a report from TopGear, Miller, whose career catapulted after "Mad Max: Fury Road," revealed some details about the installment. He said, “So we ended up with two scripts, without really trying. We’re talking to the studio [Warner Bros] about it as we speak, but which one of the two stories will happen next, I’m not so sure."
Also, last May, he talked about the possibility of having a sequel on "The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith," saying, "We’ve got one screenplay and a novella. It happened because with the delays [on 'Fury Road'], and writing all the backstories, they just expanded."
But according to Miller, before filming the sequel, he wants to make something lighter. "I want to do a small film without special effects before I do any of that, just to do it quickly. We shot Fury Road for eight months… that’s a lot. Every day in the heat and the dust, doing these stunts, it’s very wearing. We’ve got two more planned, but at some point in the future," the director told TopGear.
Cinema Blend noted that what made "Mad Max: Fury Road" an instant hit was Charlize Theron's character, Imperator Furiosa. Her character boosted energy levels with action-packed scenes, making the movie, as per Forbes, "a filmic fever dream of high-octane action perfection."
But what should fans expect in the next installment? With George Miller having almost complete creative control, the news outlet speculates that it may "get even weirder."
In the interview with TopGear, Miller shared the journey he and his team went through to make "Mad Max: Fury Road" a reality. From 9/11, collapse of the U.S. dollars to Australian dollars and shifting location from Australia to Namibia, it is safe to say that the "long and arduous" process of creating the film will affect its installments' release dates. Cinema Blend said that fans should expect an estimate of at least three to four years before the next "Mad Max" film hits theaters.
