Natalie Lucas, 18, has been a lifeguard for the past three years at the YMCA pool in Longmont, Colorado, an indoor swimming pool. In a Good Morning America interview, the young girl revealed that it was her first time helping someone deliver a baby. Many people told her that she couldn't do it as she would have passed out or freaked, but before she knew it, she was able to do what she was supposed to.
On the morning of July 24, Lucas noticed Tessa Rider and her spouse Matthew Jones walking to her pool post. The pregnant woman got into the pool first. She said she was nine months pregnant, and going to the pool eases the pain she's been experiencing as the infant inside her had been pressing against a nerve in her hips.
The couple didn't expect things to happen at the pool
"There were probably three times that week where we thought, 'We're having the baby finally.' And then nothing happened," Jones recalled.
The husband admitted they didn't know the exact date of his wife's delivery. Many times in the past several days, they thought it was happening, that it was finally the big day, but they were just false alarms. He realized that the best thing he could do was make his wife comfortable in any way, and one of those things that relaxed her was trips to the pool.
Lucas, at that time, remained observant while the pregnant woman was in the pool and immediately realized a few minutes later that she needed help.
Rider had a pool noodle to somehow alleviate the weight on her front. When she started creeping out of the pool, the Longmont native felt she needed to check the couple's status, especially the expectant mother. Rider's water suddenly broke while she was on the pool deck, so the teenager walked over, and Jones told her that they were now having the baby, and the adrenaline kicked in right then and there, per KKTV.
An unforgettable experience for the young girl
Jones immediately called 911, but while he was discussing the incident on the phone with the operator, his wife was taking off her swimsuit, and they noticed that the baby was about to come out. Despite Lucas panicking, she did her best to compose herself as she knew she needed to stay calm.
According to the lifesaver, she was astonished at how the couple seemed calm. She made sure to stay with them throughout the incident, ensured they were comfortable and provided the assistance they needed.
She then called for more help from the front desk. Lucas noticed that the cement ground wasn't good for Rider, so she assisted her in making her lean her head on a medical bag. She gave some towels to Jones. It happened fast, and for Lucas, it was pretty insane.
The couple was grateful to the teenage lifeguard as she gave extra focus to Rider, which according to Jones, was much help, as he was able to focus on the baby as he wanted to ensure the newborn's health.
If there is an emergency delivery, Healthline suggests staying calm and immediately calling 911 for sound medical advice.
