On most days, you can find mom of two Yolanda Guerrero hard at work cleaning the homes of other people. Her life, however, was turned upside down on August 8, after she and her daughter were robbed of their rent money.
ABC7 News caught up with Guerrero and her daughter Tomasa to find out more about their gut-wrenching story. The latter was the one who helped translate for her mom in the interview.
According to Tomasa, her mother is still shocked with what happened to her because she works really hard. Tomasa said that they went to a Wells Fargo in Vallejo on the day of the robbery. They took out about $2,400 in cash from the bank to pay their rent.
Security footage showed robbers stealing Guerreros' money inside their car
They stopped at a local RV park after leaving the bank. Unbeknownst to the two of them, robbers were following their car. Security footage showed at least two people accessing their unlocked vehicle. They stole the money of the Guerreros once they were inside the park's leasing office.
Guerrero was emotional when talking about the incident, saying that the robbers have to steal from other people that actually work hard instead of them working hard to earn their own money. The financial hit to the Guerrero family has been huge with Tomasa saying that her mother is now working two jobs in a bid to make back everything they lost in the robbery.
She said that her mom wakes up at 5:30 a.m. and takes care of these kids all the way to 10 p.m. She then cleans houses from 10 a.m. to 5:30 or 6 p.m.
The Guerreros made it clear that they are not just speaking out to make their story heard as they also want to warn other people of this danger so they don't become victims too. Tomasa said her mother filed a police report with the Vallejo Police Department after the robbery.
GoFundMe page set up to help Guerrero family
While nothing has come of the investigation yet, the pair said they have heard of other Latino families who have also been followed and robbed in a similar fashion in Vallejo. Cops said they cannot confirm that any suspect was targeting a specific group of people in the robberies.
But despite the hardship that the Guerrero family is now facing, they say they are still happy it was not worse. Guerrero found a silver lining in an otherwise dark moment, saying that at least nothing happened bad to them, because the robbers probably could have had guns or any bad arms while doing the heist.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Guerrero and her children during this tough and difficult time, For those who want to help the Guerrero family, they can head over to this link.
