Having a new dog in the house may help children learn responsibilities, develop compassion and patience, and forge deep friendships. However, adopting a pup isn't always straightforward as parents need to pick the best breed that will go well with the family's home and lifestyle.

Patty Stanton, a dog rescuer from California, believes that every dog will interact with children differently based on their breed type, temperament, health and their background. She believes that adopting senior dogs may be better for families with kids because these pets have a calmer temperament and can already understand what "no" means.

Speaking with Romper, Stanton said that seniors have formed their personalities and have a more manageable energy level compared to puppies. They won't likely chew toys or shoes and are better aware of how to react to kids.

However, most dog trainers will agree with Stanton's belief that the child's temperament and maturity will also factor into his relationship with the dog. A child who is gentle and respectful to the pup, regardless of their breed, will get along well with the animal.

Dog breeds and their reputation with kids

Over at TikTok, dog expert SouthendDogTraining has rounded up at least eight most ideal dog breeds for kids. His first pick is a Golden Retriever, citing that this is the friendliest dog on the planet. He also recommended St Bernard, Bernese Mountain Dog, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the Border Collie Terrier, Newfoundland, and Greyhound.

He said that the Staffy is also known as the nanny breed. Despite their intimidating appearance, Staffordshire Bull Terriers are sweet-natured, gentle and affectionate even as a small number of irresponsible dog owners have given them a bad reputation as monsters.

The Bernese Mountain Dog and St Bernard are both gentle giants, despite their large body frames. Newfoundlands are also considered nanny dogs as they are patient and watchful of their humans.

Border Collies rank as one of the smartest dogs in the world. The famous TV dog, Lassie, was a Border Collie, who adored children. Greyhounds might be known as racing dogs and hunters but they are affectionate towards well-behaved kids. Smaller children, however, might not be ideal for Greyhound pups.

Caring well for dogs

For dogs to behave around family members and people, they will need to feel the love and committment of their humans. Brandi Hunter Munden of the American Kennel Club said that, before adding a furry member, families should first "take a deep dive" into their lifestyle to assess if they have the time to ensure their dog is mentally and physically stimulated, per Today.

Even mutts, mongrels or mixed-breeds at rescue kennels can be great for kids if they belong to a loving forever family. Theoretically, any dog can be right or dangerous for the child based on how they are treated.
