Jennifer Lawrence has admitted that she experienced two miscarriages before having her firstborn son and had to go through her first baby loss alone in her early 20s.
Speaking with Vogue, the Oscar-winning superstar said that she intended to get an abortion for her first pregnancy but then lost the baby while she was alone and working in Montreal. At that time, Lawrence was in an on-and-off relationship with her "X-Men" co-star Nicholas Hoult, but she did not say if he was the father of the child she lost.
Lawrence and Hoult, however, have parted amicably. The actress once acknowledged that she and Hoult shared much more than just being exes, having grown up together on movie sets. After Hoult, Lawrence dated director Darron Aronosfky and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin before settling down.
Her second miscarriage, on the other hand, happened during her marriage to her husband, Cooke Maroney. Lawrence said she was excited to start a family but lost their first child while filming "Don't Look Up."
Lawrence did have a great pregnancy
The 32-year-old actress said that her next pregnancy was a great experience, and she felt very fortunate about having a child growing in her womb. But she worries for her son's future because of what's happening in the real world.
"Guns are the number one cause of death for children in the United States," the actress said.
Lawrence admitted that she's tired of the politics in the U.S., but her family in Kentucky, a red state, supports gun ownership. She recently tried to discuss the topic with them by sending a barrage of text messages but felt defeated after getting no responses.
The actress admitted that she and her dad have opposing political views, and she has been working hard to understand his frame of thought. Yet, now that she has a son, it breaks her heart to see people, including her family, supporting politicians who make it harder for women and children to live in America.
Despite this, the new mom focuses on and relishes her day-to-day experiences with Cy, born in February 2022. Lawrence said that having a child has extended her heart "to a capacity that I didn't know about," per People. She felt her life starting over when she had Cy but also reflected, albeit with some humor, on how he will become a "stupid teenager" one day, as she told her husband.
Lawrence also said that she's careful about discussing motherhood with people because the experience is different for every person. However, having her girlfriends around, who have been through motherhood years ahead of her, made her see that she doesn't have to be a perfect mom, and she could forgive herself if she makes mistakes with her baby.
Why Jennifer Lawrence named her son Cy
Lawrence and Maroney picked the name Cy for their son after American painter Cy Twombly, her husband's favorite. Maroney works in an art gallery, per E! News. The pair started dating around mid-2018 but largely kept their relationship out of the public eye, which was a bit hard for a superstar constantly hounded by the press.
After more than a year of dating, the pair quietly tied the knot in Rhode Island, and then COVID-19 happened a few months later, allowing the couple to be homebodies and not think about work for a while. The timing was also right as Lawrence was taking a break from doing movies for a couple of years.
