A local group in Las Vegas, Nevada is making space for more fathers to become better role models at home and in their community, according to News 3 LV.
Vegas Dads Group get together several times a week, with or without children to support each other and socialize. A special guest joined their play date over the weekend to discuss deeper matters that concern the dads as parents.
Twin brothers Gavin and Carter Zelenka are honest that potty training was a little difficult for the both of them. However, they say that their father was knocked out of the park. The brothers said it has been rough, but their father got through it. They said that he is an awesome dad and they don't know what they would do without him.
Dad shares experience with potty training
With that experience already under his belt, the twin boys' father, Kevin Zelenka, said that he is sharing those skills and more with other members of the Vegas Dads Group. Zelenka said that they talk about everything in the group, either there are problems at home or no problems at all.
Zelenka added that they talk about the good and the bad things in the group. One of their favorite topics is their kids' education, with Zelenka saying that they talked about school before the boys even went to school. One of the common questions in the group is "Where are your kids going to school?"
Zelenka said he created the group because they felt like there was a lack of resources for dads. Zelenka was not alone in thinking that as the Vegas Dads Group has now grown to almost 500 members years later.
The fathers get together several times a week for play dates and nights out. The dads had a special guest lately with Governor Steve Sisolak joining the group for a discussion. Sisolak said there is no guidebook for this sort of thing and it is not written down in a how-to book. He is glad there is a Vegas Dads Group, saying that meeting with a group of guys that could be your peers and exchange ideas with is important. He encourages more people to join the group.
Fathers enjoy discussing topics such as daycare and education
Apart from education, the dads say they enjoy discussing topics like the cost of daycare. The Vegas fathers said that it felt good to have their concerns heard by the governor himself. Vegas Dads Group member James Robertson said that he is going to eventually go into that school district so he's got to think whether he wants to stick around it or leave. He said it was nice to have that conversation with someone that cares and wanted to listen to their concerns.
