A mom and son from Northwest Indiana were killed on Tuesday, October 4, after a trailer detached from a semi on a highway, crashing into the vehicle that the two of them were riding.

Authorities responded to the 6300 block of West US 30 just before 7:50 a.m. on the report of a crash involving a passenger vehicle and a semi, according to WGN9.

Cops believe a 2019 Mack semi-truck, which Fulton native David Sutton drove, was pulling a white trailer. The 47-year-old had just exited a truck stop and was starting to travel eastbound on U.S. 30.

Mom and son pronounced dead at the scene after crash

The trailer, at some point, separated from the semi and hit a black 2022 Kia. Police said that the semitrailer was nearing the town of Wanatah shortly before 8 a.m. when the trailer separated from the tractor. According to the cops, the passenger vehicle carrying the victims struck the rear of the trailer.

Angela Oehmen, 36, of Wanatah, and her son, Joseph Oehmen, aged 14, were both pronounced dead at the scene following the heavy crash, according to Fox News. Sutton was not injured, according to the LaPorte County Sheriff's Office.

Another juvenile in the car was transported to a local hospital after suffering an upper-body injury. No details have been released regarding that person's condition apart from the juvenile getting treatment at that area hospital.

Joseph was a South Central High School student, and the community is grieving following his untimely death. The principal said in a letter to parents that their students and school community are saddened by this loss and are struggling to comprehend.

GoFundMe page created for Bryant Oehmen to help with expenses

A GoFundMe page has also been created for the man who lost his beloved son and wife in the tragic car crash on Tuesday. A family member set up the fundraiser for Bryant Oehmen to help him with the expenses.

His wife Angela and son Joseph were traveling east on U.S. 30 when their Kia car collided with the rear end of a trailer that had disconnected from the semi-truck of Sutton.

Heather Stockton wrote on the fundraiser that she is creating this GoFundMe for her cousin Bryant who lost his wife and son in an awful car accident this morning. She added that she couldn't imagine what they were going through and that her heart was breaking for them.

She then asked the people, out of the kindness of their hearts, if they could donate anything, saying that the family would appreciate anything. She closed her statement by asking the people to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers. A total of $9,157 has been donated thus far, still short of the fundraiser's goal of $30,000.
