Can Moms Have Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy?
Many pregnant women wonder if a chiropractor is safe for them, especially their babies. Experts suggest that it is generally safe as long as no force is put on the belly. It gives the baby more space and makes the mom and the baby more comfortable. Arutina

Pregnancy causes massive changes in a physical appearance alongside with growing belly, you might have to sustain some new aches and pains in the back and would complain about a sore body which many might consider giving a chiropractor a call. Hence, before dialing the number on your phone, you might wonder if those adjustments would be safe for the baby.

Eric Winiarz DC, a New York City-based chiropractor explained that chiropractors are well-trained to work with patients especially with pregnant patients as they tailor the treatment to what each patient can tolerate. However, pregnant patients must inform the chiropractors that they are expecting a baby. Dr. Winiarz explained that such care during pregnancy is typically considered both safe and effective.

Also, treatments for pregnant patient/s are more gentle and include certain techniques that can only be applied to pregnant patients. Dr. Winiarz added that they have specially designed tables that are adjustable in many ways, thus, there will be no zero pressure on the belly of the patient which makes it safe.

Every pregnancy is beautiful and different

A chiropractic technique commonly known as ART or Active Release is often used during pregnancy. It is a low-score, hands-on treatment that works to break up adhesions between muscles to loosen them up and take pressure away from the sensitive areas. Dr. Winiarz added that it is great for pregnant individuals as ART passed certain muscles an amount of time to adjust. Thus, if they are uncomfortable in a specific position, the technique can adapt to a position the patient can tolerate.

These are generally considered safe as long as the chiropractor refrains from putting any pressure on the abdomen. However, although it might be considered safe, it is still important for pregnant people to speak with OB/GYN or healthcare provider before scheduling appointments as every pregnancy is different.

The light force of gravity pulling on the pregnant belly can appear uncomfortable during pregnancy. A chiropractic technique or typically known as belly-tapping can make difference as it involves placing strips of kinesiology tape under the belly to the lower back. Dr. Winiarz explains that the tape was stretched which will give pressure off the back and disseminate it across the tape. Afterward, Dr. Winiarz claimed that after they tape the bellies, the soon-to-be-moms would feel relieved as the experience feels wonderful, per Very Well Family.

How chiropractic care can benefit pregnancy?

Chiropractic care can give the infant a little more room to make you both more comfortable as it helps to loosen up the round ligaments that connect the hip bone to the outside of the uterus. When such ligaments become tight, they can cause underbelly pain. Dr. Winiarz added that such a form of care can apply gentle pressure to the ligaments and diminishes constraint on the uterus and also maximize the space for the baby.

It also improves posture and lessens the pain as well as improves the range of motion of the spine and other joints. It also reduces symptoms of possible chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis and even helps treat minor neck or spine injuries, particularly whiplash, Cleveland Clinic says.
