FDA Calls Out Popular Dry Shampoos That May Possibly Contain Carcinogen

U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) disseminate notice after several popular dry shampoo products potentially elevates levels of the carcinogen benzene. The Unilever United States voluntarily recalls products to the consumer level of select lot codes of dry shampoo aerosol products produced before October 2021 from products from Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head) and lastly TRESemmé due to the potential existence of high levels of benzene.

According to the FDA, Benze is defined as a human carcinogen noting that exposure to benzene can happen by inhalation, orally, and through the skin and can gradually lead to cancer such as leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and other blood disorders that can be life-threatening. However, benzene appears to be ubiquitous in the environment as individuals around the world have daily exposure to it either indoors or outdoors from various sources.

Moreover, the independent health hazard evaluation states that the daily exposure of recalled products with benzene at the levels detected in the tested would not be assumed to cause adverse health consequences. Also, the recall was initiated due to an abundance of caution, and such recalled products were distributed nationwide in the United States the retailers of the said products have now been notified to oust recalled products from shelves. Here are the products commonly used by people due to their popularity.

Dove Dry Shampoo

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel or CIR classified this dove product as safe due to its current use in the cosmetic industry and added that there is no indication of toxicity when used in the right doses. However, Dove dry shampoo has been one of the recalled products by Unilever which says it contains the cancer-causing chemical.

Tresemme Dry Shampoo Volumizing

The Tresemme company assures every individual that all of their products meet the highest global safety standards and claims that all products are considered safe to use as they are rigorously assessed by leading experts that all use accepted methods and are compliant with all cosmetic industry both laws and regulations.

Unfortunately, it is also one of the recalled products. Aside from that, many of their product contains hydantoin which is a harmful ingredient that could be bad for one's hair. Moreover, according to Green Beauty Talk, such Tresemme shampoos contains sulfate-based cleanser that can dry out the scalp and appears to be too stripping.

Bed Head Dirty Secret Dry Shampoo

Benzene causes acute myeloid leukemia or AML and International Agency for Research on Cancer or IARC notes that exposure to benzene has also been associated with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), multiple myeloma, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Some of the harmful effects due to benzene exposure are caused by these products' metabolites. As a matter of fact, the metabolites of benzene stay in the body particularly in the urine within 48 hours after the said exposure.

Silive reported that there are no other products from Unilever or its brands are affected by the said recall. Unilever advised consumers to stop using products called out in the recent notice for their own sake.
