The Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney announced that a Meriwether County man was sentenced to life in prison on Friday, October 21, for attempting to murder his own mother by drowning her in a bathtub.

Dustin Michael Greene was found guilty by a Meriwether County jury of criminal attempt to commit murder, aggravated assault and false imprisonment, two counts of aggravated battery, and kidnapping with bodily injury. The 38-year-old was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole plus 80 years, according to 11 Alive.

The DA's office said that Greene's mother allowed her son to come over for Christmas on December 22, 2020. She even picked him up from a location in College Park.

Greene upset that he was not allowed to stay at the house past the holidays

Authorities said Greene became enraged after his mother told him he was allowed to stay at her house but not past the holidays.

According to police, as Greene's mother was walking upstairs to bed that night, he attacked her from behind. He then put his mom in a chokehold. She initially escaped from her son's clutches to try and call for help, but he caught up with her.

The mom attempted to go downstairs to get her phone to ask for help, but Greene was able to choke her again. He then dragged his mom, pulling her into the bathroom. He started filling the tub with water, with Greene clearly having bad intentions.

The DA's statement read that Greene attempted to drown his mother by forcing her head underwater. He then told her that he would kill her, WSB-TV reported.

Mom delivers powerful testimony against Greene

Fortunately for the mom, she was able to break free after fighting her son. According to a court report, she escaped after Greene slipped on the floor when he tried to chase her down again.

The injured mom, who suffered a broken nose and damage close to her eyes in the violent attack, ran to her neighbor's house next door, where they called Meriwether County Sheriff for help. Police officers soon arrived with Greene arrested at the scene. Afterward, the victim was taken to the hospital for the injuries she suffered at her son's hands.

The DA's office said the mom delivered a powerful testimony against her son. She talked about the pain and suffering that night when her son attacked and nearly killed her. Greene had been previously convicted of six felonies, according to AJC. That resulted in Greene getting a longer sentence from the court in the case.
