Local Authority Trading Standards notified the product recall for ASDA Girl's Day of the Dead Costume. This product has a colourful face mask, a colourful floral design, and an attached yellow, pink, blue, and green tutu. The Office tested the costume for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS).

However, it failed due to the mask of the costume concerning EN71-1, precisely the length of the strap on the cover, which presents a high risk of strangulation hazard. This product has been recognized as unsuitable for little kids, especially those under 36 months. The company had warned and urged consumers to stop using this product as it could pose a danger, particularly to kids.

On the other hand, ASDA has recalled the product from end users. The company urged the consumers to bring the product back to the nearest store, where consumers would be given a full refund even without a receipt. ASDA extend their apologies to all those who have purchased the costume due to the inconvenience they have caused.

Unsafe costume for your children

Although dressing up is fun, especially for kids, that doesn't mean it will always be safe, as most costumes entail consequences such as danger. Thus, always read the warnings and directions when buying a particular outfit for your child. As much as possible, use flame-resistant materials. Ensure that the costume has a label flame resistant and has a visible CE mark.

Remember that costumes are made up of one layer of heavier materials, contrary to layered, flimsy, frilly ones. A thinner ensemble tends to burn much faster despite having many layers, as more oxygen can get to the fire. Nylon and polyester are flame-resistant materials.

Moreover, choosing a costume that is only made out of one material often catches fire slowly compared to those with various materials. Basically, if a particular outfit is made of different fabrics and materials, it can immediately react to a flame differently and rarely fuel the fire even faster, per Closer Online.

Costumes with jewelry may also pose a danger

Adorning your child's costume might be fun, but little did parents know that these decorations or jewelry can also pose risks to children. Usually, jewelry found in costumes may contain toxic heavy metals such as nickel, chromium, lead, and cadmium, which are all harmful to the child.

Kids are prone to sucking, so they can place such things in their mouths, eventually affecting their health. For instance, cadmium may affect skeletal and cardiovascular systems that are clearly harmful to health.

Furthermore, a long beaded necklace may also pose risks of strangulation and choking despite looking beautiful around your child's precious neck. Some parts of the necklace may also tear down, allowing the child to put tiny pendants or beads into their mouth, potentially choking them.

Some jewelry may also trigger allergies in children considering that they have delicate and sensitive skin. Thus, ensure considering such factors that can trigger allergies as this can lead to itchy rash and more, The Asian Parent says.
