The former first lady just got candid about marriage and its challenges. Earlier this month, Michelle Obama joined Revolt TV for a roundtable conversation where she revealed that there were ten years, out of the 30 years she has been married to husband Barack Obama, 61, that she "couldn't stand" him.
The 58-year-old author of the New York Times bestseller "The Light We Carry" described to moderator Angie Martinez and fellow panelists Kelly Rowland, H.E.R., Winnie Harlow, and Tina Knowles-Lawson that those ten years reflected imbalance in their marriage. It was in a season when Barack's political career was "ascending," and she was left to primarily take care of their two daughters Sasha and Malia, who were still little.
Marriage isn't 50/50 ever
"There were ten years where I couldn't stand my husband. And guess when it happened? When those kids were little. And for ten years while we're trying to build our careers and, you know, worrying about school and who's doing what and what, I was like, 'Ugh, this isn't even,'" Michelle shared.
According to Page Six, she felt distraught that she was doing the "heavy lifting" while her husband was often absent. Moreover, it angered her how the former president could still find time to travel for work or even enjoy gold while she struggled to balance motherhood and her career as a lawyer.
Yet, she also revealed her realization that marriage is never 50/50. She continued narrating how there were times in their marriage when she was 70, and he was 30. There were also times when the former U.S. president was 60, and she was 40.
However, she said the sweetest thing when she expressed how she would take that ten bad years over their 30 years of marriage because when she looks back at it, it's a beautiful image of not giving up on the marriage, family, and the one she loves.
30 years together and more to go
Michelle and Barack first met in 1989, and they tied the knot three years later. The couple has victoriously survived that rocky season in their marriage and just recently celebrated their 30th anniversary, People reported.
Last October, the 44th president of the United States took to Instagram and posted photos of their sweet memories together, including their black-and-white wedding photo and a photo of them on the beach.
The caption stated that he is not sure why after 30 long years, his wife, who he affectionately calls "Miche," looks the same while he does not. What he knows and is sure of is that he "won the lottery" the day she married him. He ended by stating that he could not ask for a better partner in life.
On the other hand, Michelle responded via Twitter greeting the man she loves a happy anniversary and sharing how the last 30 years have been a great adventure she is grateful for, especially taken beside him.
