The American actor is now a father of working adults, and he revealed how he is enjoying a different phase of fatherhood.
Rob Lowe spoke to People on the green carpet of his movie premiere for "Dog Gone," and shared what it was like to have grown-up children who are already working.
The 58-year-old filmmaker defined parenting now as a "whole other level" with children who are done with college.
He shares sons Matthew, 30, who joined him on the premiere, and John Owen, 28, with 61-year-old wife, Sheryl Berkoff.
A gift to be working with son
What's more, the podcast host is not only parenting working adults but is also working with one of them - John Owen.
Lowe has been spending time with John Owen, filming the Netflix comedy series Unstable and creating and producing it.
In an exclusive interview with Parade last year, the father shared how much of a gift it is to work alongside her son.
"The fact that it started in our heads and then came to fruition on Netflix is really, you know, I've seen a lot in my years, but I never thought I would see my son and I co-creating a TV series and anybody out there who gets to work with their kids knows what a gift that is. It's a whole other layer of your relationship," Lowe declared.
When asked if he goes into the "dad mode" while shooting and working together, the actor said it is surprisingly the opposite.
He shared that he forgets that John Owen is his son when they are shooting, which is definitely weird, except in scenes when they play father and son. He also said it was an amazing revelation to feel he is just working with a "peer."
He also emphasized how nobody else can be a perfect partner in making the film except for his son, as no one else would better understand.
Newest project is a funny reflection of their father-son relationship
Lowe also shared how their father-son relationship inspired their project.
According to his father, John Owen loves trolling him on social media, and they realized that people became so interested in it. They saw it had a huge opportunity to become a show, so they explored the possibility.
Ultimately, they came up with a funny take on a "benevolent narcissist father in the spotlight, who means very well," Lowe said.
Unstable is a series that follows a socially-challenged, introverted son, played by John Owen, who works under his very successful yet highly eccentric father, played by Lowe, to save his father from disaster. It is set in a radical, revolutionary biotech research company.
