The University of Mississippi Medical Center recorded its first quintuplets, the birth of whom became the talk of the city. Of course, birthing the babies required a team of medical professionals to ensure they were coming out as safely as possible.
Mississippi mom births rare quintuplet
According to TODAY, a Mississippi couple has welcomed a set of quintuplets - identical quadruplets and one boy, after years of trying to conceive.
Haylee Ladner, a middle school teacher, gave rare quintuplet birth on February 16.
She and her husband, Shawn Ladner, underwent intrauterine insemination (IUI) in 2022.
The couple's doctor, Dr. Rachael Morris, who took care of their pregnancy and birthing procedure, noted that the odds of having identical quadruplets are about one in 15 million, while quintuplets occur in roughly one in every 60 million births.
A few weeks after the IUI, an ultrasound revealed five heartbeats. Haylee Ladner had successfully delivered her children at UMMC.
It has been confirmed that the four girls are identical quadruplets, resulting from one fertilized egg being divided four ways.
Adalyn Elizabeth was born first, weighing 2 pounds, 2 ounces, and measuring 13.38 inches long, followed by Everleigh Rose, who weighed 2 pounds, .8 ounces and measured 12.59 inches. Sister Malley Kate came next, weighing 1 pound, 11 ounces, and measuring 12.99 inches long, and Magnolia Mae was the last to be delivered, weighing 2 pounds, 2 ounces and measuring 13.18 inches.
The Mississippi mom's largest infant is her baby boy, Jack, born at 2 pounds, 5 ounces.
During the birthing process, Haylee was assisted by four surgeons, five anesthesiologists, 30 to 35 neonatologists, and various other physicians and therapists.
Despite facing challenges during the pregnancy and delivery, the couple was delighted to have all five babies beside them after experiencing two miscarriages.
Rare quintuplet birth
The birth of the Ladner quintuplets has captured the attention of many people nationwide. As per USA Today, this miraculous event marks the highest number of multiple babies born at the UMMC since the quadruplets of Craig and Kimberly Fugate were born at the same hospital in 2014.
People reported that Haylee expressed gratitude to Dr. Rachael Morris, who is also an associate professor in maternal-fetal medicine at UMMC and took care of her pregnancy and birthing procedure.
Morris had assured the couple that they would be taken care of, and she delivered on her promise. Haylee was admitted to the hospital on January 11 and delivered the babies by cesarean section at 28 weeks and one day.
All five babies are doing well and have been admitted to Children's of Mississippi neonatal intensive care. The Mississippi mom is extremely grateful to the hospital staff who helped her give birth to her miracle babies.
She is also thankful for finally achieving her lifelong dream of becoming a mother. Being the mother of five, she says, is the greatest blessing of her entire life.
