Parents across the country have been urged to take immediate action following a warning issued by The Boppy Company and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Recalled newborn loungers manufactured by The Boppy Company have been linked to at least ten tragic infant deaths. According to ABC, the joint statement released by the company and the CPSC emphasizes the potential risks associated with these loungers, which may cause infants to suffocate if they roll, move, or are placed in positions that obstruct their breathing.

The recall, initially issued two years ago, affects several Boppy lounger models, including the Boppy Original Newborn Loungers, Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers, and Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers. Despite the recall, it has come to light that these products have still been available for purchase through online platforms like Facebook Marketplace, prompting a stern reminder from the CPSC that selling or offering recalled products is against the law.

At Least 10 Infant Deaths Linked to Recalled Boppy Loungers

Tragically, The Boppy Company disclosed that eight infant deaths had been reported in connection with the use of Boppy newborn loungers between December 2015 and June 2020. Shockingly, even after the recall in 2021, at least two more infants lost their lives while placed in Boppy newborn loungers.

According to CNN, one devastating incident occurred in October 2021 when an infant was placed on the lounger for sleep and tragically rolled underneath an adjacent adult pillow, leading to positional asphyxia. In November 2021, another heartbreaking incident involved an infant placed on a Newborn Lounger in an adult bed with soft bedding. The infant was later discovered deceased on the lounger, but the exact cause of death remains undetermined.

Both the CPSC and The Boppy Company issued an urgent plea to parents, urging them to immediately cease using these recalled loungers. Parents who possess the affected products are advised to visit The Boppy Company's website or contact them directly at 800-416-1355 on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET to receive disposal instructions and request a refund.

CPSC and The Boppy Company Commit to Ensuring Child Safety

In addition to discontinuing the use of the recalled Boppy loungers, the CPSC stressed the importance of creating a safe sleep environment for infants. This includes providing a firm and flat surface, such as a crib, bassinet, or play yard, for babies to sleep on. It is crucial always to place infants on their backs when they sleep, as recommended by pediatric experts. The CPSC also emphasized that soft items like blankets, pillows, and padded crib bumpers should never be added to an infant's sleeping area, as they pose additional risks.

According to USA Today, this urgent warning serves as a stark reminder of the paramount importance of prioritizing infant safety. Promptly responding to recalls and adhering to recommended safe sleep practices significantly reduces the risk of potential harm to infants.

The CPSC remains committed to investigating incidents related to these recalled Boppy loungers and ensuring the safety of children. The cooperation and vigilance of parents and caregivers play a pivotal role in safeguarding infants and preventing tragic accidents. By taking immediate action and spreading awareness, we can collectively strive to protect the most vulnerable members of our society and ensure their well-being.
