As inflation continues to burden Americans nationwide, several states are stepping up to alleviate financial pressures by distributing stimulus checks and tax refunds. Whether due to budget surpluses or the implementation of new social assistance programs, these payments aim to provide much-needed relief to individuals and families. Here is a breakdown of the states offering these payments, along with instructions on how to request them and the corresponding amounts.

California residents, specifically those residing in Los Angeles County, have a unique opportunity through the Guaranteed Income Program called Breathe. Eligible individuals who have been in foster care until the age of 18 or beyond, with an income equal to or less than the local median, may receive monthly payments of $1,000 for a duration of two years. For households with two members, the combined income must be below 120 percent of the area's median. According to AS, applicants must also demonstrate adverse effects from the COVID-19 pandemic, although specific examples have not been provided. Applications can be submitted electronically through the Breathe Program website from June 20 to July 3, with only 200 recipients being selected.

Georgia Provides Rebates of $250 for Individuals and $500 for Couples

In Georgia, the state government has announced rebates of $250 for individuals and $500 for couples. These rebates are exclusively available to residents who filed tax returns for both 2021 and 2022. Taxpayers who submitted their returns before April 18th can expect to receive their payments this month, although it may take up to eight weeks for the funds to be disbursed.

Massachusetts taxpayers may be eligible for a significant refund amounting to approximately fourteen percent of their state tax liability. This substantial refund stems from a revenue surplus that exceeded state regulations, prompting the tax authority to distribute the excess funds back to taxpayers. The initial round of payments was issued in December to individuals who filed their 2021 tax returns before October 17, 2022. Subsequently, the tax authority has been delivering refund checks approximately one month after receiving the return. Therefore, individuals who filed their taxes in May can anticipate receiving their payment in June.

Meanwhile, in New Jersey, approximately 2 million households have become eligible for property tax rebates through the Affordable New Jersey Communities for Homeowners and Renters (ANCHOR) program. As part of ANCHOR, 50,000 individuals will receive a sum of $450. The disbursement process is ongoing, with recipients receiving funds either through direct deposit or by check. The application deadline for the program ended on February 28th.

Minnesota Residents to Receive Direct Tax Refunds in 2023

Moving on to Minnesota, eligible residents will receive direct tax refunds as a result of a law signed in May. The Minnesota Department of Revenue will be sending direct tax refunds in 2023 based on income eligibility. Married couples filing jointly with an adjusted gross income of $150,000 or less will receive $520, while all others with an adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less will receive $260. An additional $260 will be granted for each dependent claimed on the return, up to three dependents.

To qualify, taxpayers must have been Minnesota residents for part or all of 2021, have filed the required tax returns before December 31, 2022, and not have been claimed as dependents on someone else's 2021 Minnesota income tax return. No application is necessary for this payment, as it will be sent directly to eligible taxpayers based on their 2021 income or property tax returns. The state's tax authority has announced that payments will commence in the fall.

As financial challenges persist for many Americans, these stimulus checks and tax refunds provide a much-needed lifeline. The initiatives undertaken by these states demonstrate a commitment to supporting their residents during these uncertain times. Eligible individuals are encouraged to follow the specified instructions to ensure they receive the assistance they deserve.
